I posted this one awhile back. I bought it graded XF Details cleaned last year. I bought it for a few reasons . It was at my shop locally . I talked them to 1200.00 and I thought it looked better than XF I had thought if cleaned was the nicest cleaned coin I had seen. Nice color nice luster . Any scratches look like dresser rubs . I resubmitted thinking I could get either a XF-45 straight grade or more likely a AU details since it's a tough coin.     |

Eric I cracked it and dipped it in acetone to get the glaze off it

Lucky score, although I don't see how this could be an AU-53. Dipped to the moon or cleaned for sure. I believe that would be a tough sell for decent AU-53 money.

The coin is more golden in hand .
I'm sure it was dipped in acetone before I did it.
I am surprised by the grade as I thought it would get a AU details though it does not look cleaned .
Looks like cabinet rub.
Color looks good to me .
No doubt I am happy regardless and I have no plans on selling it anytime soon as it's a super nice half and I need it for my set.

very nice coin JasonKflo.
It looks to be 1872-CC WB-2, Large CC, This is the first use of this obverse die and first use of this reverse die in 1872.
It has a rarity of R-4 = very scarce (population estimated at 76-200) of this particular die marriage.

For 1200 on a 72cc I could be looking at a lot worse or lower grade

In this submission I had a
1840 half that came back AU-50
Also a 77cc half that came back Au details cleaned. That coin looked good minus a few rim bumps . I had it at details

In my 30 years of submitting more than 2,000 coins and notes for grading to PGCS and NGC, I still say without hesitation - it's a crapshoot.

I agree Coinfrog it's a crapshoot This was one of those coins that looks better in hand and to me was worth the gamble considering what I paid . I knew it would not come back worse than the original grade I will say they are becoming a lot harder on Trade dollars than before |

I feel like recently I've seen a lot more over-grades coming out of NGC than PCGS or ANACS. Has anyone else noticed this?
