This coin is graded MS64 from PCGS. The reverse side on the shield has no vertical lines. What are your thoughts as to why? Is this common in this series?

Thanks
Dan

Is it yours or seller images? Seems like a lighting issue.

It's the sellers pictures, not in my hand. But multiple pictures show the same flat surface.
The horizontal lines are so clear how could the vertical lines just be a light issue?

Agree it's likely a lighting artifact. The light source appears to be coming from the top, so the horizontal bars will show up clearly, but the vertical bars will not be well-defined.

You can see traces of the lines in the photo, so I'm with the crowd on it being lighting (although the vertical lines were never super sharply defined to begin with on these.)
Die wear might also be a factor as the coin has numerous die cracks.

This would be a pass for me with those photos for 64 money. Worried that the photos might be hiding some issues with the cheek in particular. I'd ask for better photos first before throwing bids in.

Have you done the cert lookup and is there an image of it on PCGS?

Chances are the shield lines are there and it is a photo issue. The over all strike looks good so I doubt there is a problem only with the shield area.
