The 1900 is a Philadelphia coin and has no mint mark. The 1885 is from San Francisco and has a 's' mint mark. If there are mint marks they will be found below the wreath on the reverse side of the coin. Hope this helps. |

Thanks, Dan. One more question, Upon inspecting closer, I see something that could possibly be a P or an F here... or am I just seeing things?  |

I can't tell but what did you use to take the pictures they are nic qulity photos an how did you highlight the area of the possible mint mark .

I use the Canon 20D with the 50mm f/2.5 Macro lens with some studio lighting and fill flash. To make the highlight, I went into photoshop, captured the area I wanted highlighted with the circular capture tool, copied it, pasted it into a new layer, then turned the bottom layer darker to make the possible mint mark show up as the obvious spot to look in the photo.

First of all, I'd like to welcome you to Coin Community.  No one has offered opinions on the grades of your coins, so I'll do that: 1900 - AU50 - I see slight rub on the highest points and hairlines and wear on the breast although the breast and leg feathers are still nicely defined. 1885 - F12 - With the hairlines visible on the obverse, I'd call it F15 except for the wear on the eagle's breast and wing feathers. I'm not sure about the area by the star that you highlighted. Do you have a VAM book and are you interested in the different varieties? |

I do not have any sort of coin identification books, but I am interested in the different variaties! I was recently given an old box of coins from around the world. Some of them I recognize as being ancient Roman/Greek, others are much newer. I'm going to be away from my system starting Monday for some family matters, but I am hoping to photograph all my coins and put up a site with details about them all. I like collecting coins. In fact, I have been working on a design for my own set of coins for a book series I am writing.
Is there a definition somewhere as to what the grades mean? I'm not sure what AU50 or F12/F15 mean.
