I have a 1955 D that the last 5 in 1955 looks strange. I am new to coin collecting and I am learning so, please be nice. I have tried to research the possible error coin but, I can't find it in my Red Book guide, and I have not found it on the net. I understand that there are double die errors for 1955 but, this does not look like a double die error to me. Will you please share your thoughts on this possible error and if this is a known error, what resource did you use to find it? Thank you for your feedback! Kind Regards. ]   |

Appears to be post-strike damage--a lateral hit has moved metal. This can happen in old school rotary coin-operated vending machines.

I am trying to learn to tell the difference between strike errors and post error. I am not really sure how you can tell this is a post error. I will study it closer to try to understand. Thank you for your reply.

This is an example of a 1956 that I am sure it is a post strike error. This example I think is very obvious.  |

Thank you for the link. It appears that post errors usually happen on the last number of the date in these pennies. I am learning! Thank you!!

It's not an error, it's Post Mint Damage ( PMD). Mechanical damage caused this. I agree with ijn1944. Errers and Varietys.

I came across this 1984 penny while going thru all of the pennies my father had. I know this is probably PMD. I am curious as to how this PMD is made? I can't imagine a Gumball Machine doing this. I also weighed it, and it weighs 2.51 which is a little off from the 2.5. Could this be a counterfeit attempt at making a mint error coin?   |

That last 1984 cent looks like it might be a legitimate off center strike.
