Just picked up these two ladies... paid $120 and $109 respectively on ebay.

Help on Overton numbers would be appreciated!

The auction has a 7 day return policy... so be brutally honest please. I will probably wind up keeping these coins unless they are fake. That said, I would like to know what anyone has to say.

1829: My guess is probably EF-40? The scratch on the reverse hurts but isn't as easy to see in hand.

1831: Why are the stars trailing towards the rim like this? Die attrition? It looks to me like this coin has got some serious strike weakness going on in places.. especially the rim on the obverse.. doesn't appear to be wear to me O_o?

Oh yeah and ... I really like the toning.. I think it is natural but am not sure.

Are either of these problem coins? Or did I just get a good deal?

Help!

The 1831 looks odd to me. I think this one might be a copy. The 1829 looks to be EF-40

What specifically on the 1831 makes you think it might be a copy. I looked at it briefly, and saw die breaks around the date. Would a copy have those?

Just an overall impression, shape of the stars and details around the edge. Though I admit that the bust looks OK. Guess I'm just suspect about those areas.

I think that the coin was probably cleaned at some point in its life but was then allowed to retone in an album for many years where it acquired its current toning. That is not a bad thing and many CBHs have been cleaned at some point, some much worse than others but this appears to be one that turned out well. I wouldn't kick it out of my collection The weak dentils and stretched stars are signs of Die Deterioration.

Is there any way I could persuade you to post pics taken straight-on? The focus and details of these are very nice, but attribution requires determining the relationship between things like the T in STATES to the I in PLURIBUS, and the stars to the milling on the obverse.

The perspective of these pics makes it pretty difficult to attribute either coin. That said, I'm going to guess the 1831 as O-102.
