Hello all!
This is a brand new hobby for me, only a few months in (I tend to get hyper-focused on new interests, tho). All started by finding some bicentennial silver-dollars that I had forgotten that I had tucked away, and wondered if those had any value. And while those silver-dollars started this adventure, I would have to say that I'm finding myself much more interested in pennies. Maybe because they're easier to come by? Maybe because it seems (to me, still brand new, remember!) that there are more errors and varieties to hunt and discover? I do know that I'm growing esp. fond of unusual, or beautiful toning over bright and shinny. I'm a painter/artist, so that might explain some of it.
I'm still learning a great deal; esp. terminology and the basics. Such as: how to tell the difference between
Machine Doubling and doubled die...how to (roughly) gauge the grade of a coin...distinguishing between an "error" and a "variety"...and, so forth.
I have been doing some research, and I have been putting coins to the side that I think might be worth keeping or selling, most of which I plan to share in this forum to see if I'm assessing correctly, or not. However, I hope to do so in a systematic way, focusing on those coins most promising and those where I hope to learn more from (such as variety vs error).
I've also read in a couple of threads that it's best to start a new post rather than hopping into one that may have the same question on the same coin (date and error/variety), since the older post may not have seen traction in a while (and perhaps keeping discussion more specific and focused?). Please verify if I'm understanding this correctly?
I hope to post and get input on a 1968-S penny that I have that I believe is a
DDO example. This penny will also be my first 'official' post!
Looking forward!
