Hi everyone. I dusted off my old collection with the kids (7 and 5 years old) because the oldest one is currently very into Greek Mythology and I remembered that I have some old Roman bronze coins. It has been fun to get back into the hobby, and I think I have caught the collecting bug again.

About me
I have a history degree and an urban planning degree. I worked as an urban planner for many years, but I am currently working as a software engineer. For me coins hit the sweet spot of history, economics, and technology!

About my collection
My great grandmother decided to put a roll of Mercury dimes away in a drawer in 1945 when they discontinued the design. She added a roll of Walking Liberty half dollars a couple years later. In 1964 she added a roll of Roosevelt dimes, Washington quarters, and a mix of Kennedy/Franklin half dollars. This was eventually passed down to my dad and then to me. Throughout my childhood I added to it through coin roll hunting and filling out the Whitman folders. I added a few odds and ends from the LCS. I even got those ancient Roman coins mentioned above off of ebay.

What interests me about collecting
I feel like what really sets humans apart is our ability to cooperate. Markets represent a big leap forward in our ability to cooperate, and coins are a technology that demonstrate our capacity for abstract thought. They symbolize labor/value. It's cool to think about how coins are deeply human artifacts.

I'm interested in collecting coins that have been in circulation and have some wear. It is amazing to me to handle coins that were used by people hundreds (or even thousands) of years ago and to think about how they were in contract with these same coins, what was going on at the time, and what their lives must have been like. Collecting worn out coins also helps keep costs down!

Definitely a complement! I feel like these types of forums were almost made extinct by social media but that they are making a come back.

I've often said that one of the things I like about coins is that they're one of the few ancient inventions that we still use today. If you, hypothetically, took a time machine back to ancient Greece or Rome, kidnapped an ancient citizen at random, and brought them back with you to the present, that poor unfortunate time-displaced citizen would be totally confused by most of what they saw around them - the technology, the language, the customs and culture would all be alien to them. But give them a modern coin, and they'd not only know instantly what it was, but have a reasonably accurate idea about how to use it.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
