Same deal as the other recent 1942-S dime. Top gap is large; lower serif is bridged to the body.

Brand, I'm not quite following, please help me understand. Yes, I think you may be correct in this example and also your earlier post of another being an inverted mm but do not understand the FS-501 reference. The FS-501 is of the large S (MMS-003), being used on a 1928 and a totally different punch from the MMS-005, which is the mm on your example, that I would agree looks inverted. Help my little brain.

I think you have the year or denomination mixed up. There are a lot of mint mark shenanigans on San Francisco coins from 1940-1946, including cents, nickels, dimes, quarters.

For 1942-S dimes, the FS-501 is an inverted serif S mint mark. There appear to be at least two dies represented in the PCGS image catalog, each with a slightly different position on the inverted S.

Back at ya. No offence but I trust Dr. Wiles more than PCGS.

While I was waiting for a response, I decided to do some more digging, I like to dig. In your defense and PCGS's, I did find Wexler listing your inverted S, which I agreed from the get go that yours looked inverted, was just confused with the FS-501 designation. Now I think I understand it, but still odd that these same designations be used for two totally different varieties, even if by two different attributers, I don't get it....

Maybe when you get into a different year, even if it's the same denomination and series of coin, it's fair game to reuse an FS number? I don't know. Alright, Brand, I've messed with your thread enough and that was not my intention. Just wanting to learn.

I will see your Dr. Wiles and raise you a John Wexler?

http://www.doubleddie.com/1179161.html

The IMM is in the Cherrypicker's Guide as 1942-S 10¢ FS-501. Are we debating whether that exists as an attributable CPG variety, or whether this particular coin is indeed an FS-501? Variety Vista is encyclopedic, but it doesn't have 100% perfect overlap to Wexler, CopperCoins, CONECA, or CPG (nor do they respectively have perfect overlap to each other). Maybe Dr. Wiles objects to the 1942-S 10¢ IMM the same way he objected to the now-delisted 1941-S 5¢ FS-503?

At best, I think we chop up the pot, at least until I get better answers to my questions. I hate a pot that gets chopped though. Have not played poker in years, miss it....

I didn't see the other posts until I replied, but I didn't have time for another round of posts last night.

I think your question is about FS numbers themselves? The full FS number is FS-denomination-(year+mintmark)-code.

FS 500 is the code for mint mark variety. The numbers climb in sequence. Since 501 is the first in sequence, there are many FS-501 coded coins. For example, FS-10-1942D-501 is a D/D RPM, but FS-10-1942S-501 happens to be the inverted S.

FS-10-1942D-501: https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin...s-501/145548
FS-10-1942S-501: https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin...s-501/511113

It's maybe easier to see the reuse of codes on NGC VarietyPlus:

Hopefully, I have correctly understood the question.

Alright, Brand, did some more digging and I guess when you go to a different year in the same denomination, the numbers start over. I found NGC listings that show the different merc varieties and they don't repeat the same FS# in the same year. I thought it odd that they don't have your variety though, maybe just have not had one sent in to them yet. Ok, I have a better understanding of the numbers now but I think I remember someone posting that the numbering system in changing now, so probably all for not....
