I visited the annual Houston Money Show Friday, and saw what appeared to be more gold coins available than usual. In speaking with one of my LCS employees/friend, he said gold was not moving at these high prices.

Hey, thecoinguy1964 - I was there that day too! There certainly was a lot of gold on display. I did see one $18K transaction but only because I was looking through the dealer's junk box at the time. Other than that I was too busy looking at coins to notice what other people were buying.

US Mint 2024 production of bullion gold eagles and gold buffalos dropped considerably from 2023. If I read right 924K 1 oz gold eagles sold in 2023, in 2024 only 308K. I assume high spot price and inflation/economy have reduced sales from the average collector/stacker.

However, recent auctions of high dollar collectable coins seem to have been strong so collectors with the means are still buying those.

Buy gold - feed the family, Decisions, decisions. The high prices have narrowed the field of gold buyers.

We have a similar screen name the coinguy1964!

I owned about 400 ounces of silver last Fall and decided to convert it to gold so I've picked up quite a bit of gold recently. I also sold a couple nice firearms and a 1.0 carat diamond ring from an engagement that fell through.

So I had almost $20k to buy U.S. gold coins (my favorite form of gold). So far I have bought two $25 GAE proofs, a $50 GAE, four $5 Liberty Half Eagles, a $10 Liberty Eagle, two $20 Double Eagles and several 1/10 oz gold Britannias. I buy at very close to melt price maybe paying a 5-10% premium for MS certified pieces.

So the $20k is pretty much gone but it's been fun! Most pieces are PCGS certified. I believe gold will run to $5000 over the next 5 years. At least I hope so!

I purchased gold when it was under $2000, now it's a little expensive but if I can get close to melt I do.

hfjacinto, nice gold there! Yeah I think gold premiums have come down some and there are sales to entice buyers. I got a couple ounces from Costco a few months ago.

Looks like most everything is on the
Sell side .
Was at a decent sized coin show this
weekend, most dealers sold very little gold
or Silver bullion.
A bunch of dealers also stated they were
putting the breaks on buying anymore .
Killing cash flow !

The only interesting gold lately were a couple of French Celtic electrum staters. My local dealer has plenty of junk coins but nothing interesting as collectable. Online there's plenty available but at very high prices.

I was not buying gold when it was affordable, I am certainly not buying it now. I am certain the recent pricing has moved many more people into the not buying group.

Heldar, that is a sight of pure beauty! During the last 12 months, I didn't pick up anything large, but I did get four Liberty Head gold dollars, three gold Indians $2.50, a few Liberty Gold Half eagles near melt, and this AU-58 1903 G$1 LA Purchase-Jefferson Commemorative.

Can you imagine a collector with the $200-$300 per oz. memories, looking at gold today ! My first ounce, a maple, was $1100 ... I can't get myself to buy at todays prices.

My gold bullion buying days are over but when I was flying into Thailand in the early 70's I was buying pure gold Baht necklaces when gold was fluctuating around $50 - $70 an ounce. I would always buy a 3 Baht necklace (1.44+troy ounce) on my enlisted mans pay but some of the flight officers were buying 5 & 10 Baht necklaces. The larger necklaces were very impressive to say the least.
