Hello everyone. I have posted a few posts on the topic of the JFK CRH but it has just gotten to be too long for me to keep up with so I thought I would start a new one. Especially since I haven't had a chance to log on in about a month or so. In the mean time I have started a log on my findings (silver and such). I have gone through several boxes of half dollars recently...about 2-3 a week. My finds are as follows:
March 25,2009: 5 - 40% Kennedys 1 - 1974 D double die
April 1,2009: 2 - 40% Kennedys 1 - S Proof (1989 S) Appoximately 600 - NIFC (2003-2008) I know it sounds like a lot but that is no exaggeration
April 8,2009: 2 - 40% Kennedys
April 15,2009: 2 - 40% Kennedys
April 27,2009: 1 - Walker (1942) 1 - Franklin (1953 D) 2 - 1964 Kennedys 9 - 40% Kennedys 3 - S Proofs (1971 S, !981 S, 1981 S)
May 6,2009: 2 - Franklins 2 - 1964 Kennedys 8 - 40% Kennedys 1 - NIFC (2007 P)
May 8,2009: 1 - Franklin 1 - 1964 Kennedy 9 - 40% Kennedys 1 - S Proof (1999 S) 1 - 1974 D double die
May 11,2009: 1 - NIFC (2003 P)
May 15,2009: 3 - Franklins 17 - NIFC
May 18,2009: 1 - Franklin 5 - NIFC
May 22,2009: 1 - S Proof (1985 S)

Does your bank always have halves or do you order them ? The banks in my area rarely if ever have them.

Those are some really nice fines. Like Numismo, my banks never seem to have them. But, more important, appears my thinking is wrong. I've just thought that even if I could get them, there would be nothing to find and they would already be searched.

Since you said you have gone thru several boxes of halves I assume you are ordering $500 boxes from your bank. How many boxes do you search each week? I did this each week with my bank for a while but stopped after finding nothing for several months. You are on quite a roll(no pun intended).

Great find on the Franklins and Walker. My boxes recently either seem to have 15 silvers or none. Last week I had one, so I hope I'm in for a big one this week!

To answer your questions...I have to special order them. Most of the tellers at my bank know me now and are very helpful in helping me get them. I have a standing order to get two $500 dollar boxes per week. In the boxes that I didn't find anything I did not list them but there have been several of those. Recently I have found some more silver but I don't have the figures in front of me at the moment. I will be posting again soon. On a side note. I did find a weird coin about two weeks ago now. It appeared to be hollow and the back of the coin would spin. It appeared to be a 1971 Kennedy half. I didn't think much of it and set it aside. Today I looked at it more carefully and found a surprise. I was able to open the coin and on the inside was another obverse of some kind of foriegn coin. The back is your standard U.S. half with the Eagle. The Obverse of the Kennedy was seperate and hollow. This my not be making much sense but I will be posting a picture that should clear up the confusion sometime this week.

Brandonian...you must have a good relationship/large account balance with your bank?
I WOULD LOVE AND GET $1000 WORTH OF HALVES A WEEK TO CHECK!!
Do you return the non-silver?
I might try and talk to someone at my bank, non-teller, and see if they would do this for me.
Please let us know how you go about this.
In these tough economic times, many people are turning a lot of coins in (silver to those who don't know!)

Turns out that the inside obverse is a british large cent with the US half dollar reverse. Very strange if you ask me. I'm still trying to get to the bottom of this. It appears to be two coins in one. I'm still going to try to put up some pictures. I don't have access to a good camera at the moment. As soon as I do I'll get back on here and update my last entry.

What are the NIFCs that you are finding? I take it they are good things to find?

Quote: What are the NIFCs that you are finding? I take it they are good things to find? NIFC means "not intended for circulation". Besides silver and errors, nifc's such as proofs and dates not released for circulation are occasionally found in rolls. My last box of rolls netted me a 1999S silver proof and a 2007S proof!

To get the coins...I talked to the head teller and asked her to order me these coins. I told her that I was trying to fill up a coin album for my collection and I hunt for silver. I was straight up about it and they were cool with me doing so. To answer the other question...yes, I return the non silvers through the coin star machine. My bank has one that does not charge a usage fee for members. I don't have a very large account, I just saved for a while until I had enough to front the initial $500 and then I just recycle the same amount each time minus what I kept. Since I go so often the tellers all know me by name and usually ask about my latest finds and even hold onto anything they think I might be interested in such as dollar coins (new and old) and any other odd coins. I've also had a lot of luck going through boxes of nickels finding old buffalo and silver WWII era. Just mention to them that you will be interested in getting however many boxes every week or whatever you want. I have a standing order for two boxes a week of halves. Good luck and feel free to post and good finds.

Here are my updated finds since my last posted:
May 27,2009 3 - 1964 Kennedys 6 - 40% Kennedys
May 29,2009 2 - NIFC
June 1,2009 6 - 40% Kennedys 2 - "S" Proofs (1983 S, 1983 S)yes two of the same
June 3,2009 2 - 1964 Kennedys 5 - 40% Kennedys
I have been doing fairly well recently. I list my "S" Proofs separately from my NIFC (2003-present). Good luck to everyone and please feel free to post your finds as well.

Alot of us that do this use a couple of different banks to avoid problems. The banks get charged for ordering coin and shipping them back out. (I ran into that problem) My new bank agreed to order halves for me as long as I take them somewhere else (sounds fair to me). They don't want to have pay for JFKs round trip ticket...lol. So, I'm going to be dumping alot of halves at the bank that refused to order them for me! (It's a good dump bank because as long as my cash deposit is there before they close, it's available the next day)

I finally got a picture of the weird coin I was talking about in an earlier post. If you are interested in more details I posted a new topic called Recycling Foreign Coin into US coins? https://goccf.com/t/48265 I will be posting some pictures of my finds hopefully in the next week or so.

Quote: What kind of crazy bank do you use that does not make cash deposits available immediately? I thought this was standard. Alot of banks have a 2:00 pm cut off. If your deposit isn't made before 2:00, it is not posted the next day. In fact, it is currently the only bank I know of in the area that doesn't have the 2;00 cut off. My new bank is RBC which is a Canadian based bank! It too currently has the 2:00 cut off..but is supposed to be changing to 5:00 sometime this month.
