Hi all, I'm sorta out of my element when engaging in most Numismatics other than Mint Errors lol, Is this spotting from 7 o'clock to 9 o'clock area Carbon or Red turning Brown oxidation? It's more pronounced with TrueView. TrueView: In PCGS Holder: Thanks! Edited by Vorpaledged 04/16/2025 9:16 pm

You don't mention if you bought it or what grade it is. Looks like roughness on the die - Rusted die that had been cleaned?

@Marv65, Thanks! It's MS66+RD, If I can find out what it is and it's a normal thing I might be interested in purchasing it but if it's something that is undesirable, I won't be. Excuse the shallow info as It's something I am interested in buying. Here's a larger photo:

Quote: It's MS66+RD, That's a great grade - I think the only way to find out is a direct call to PCGS.

I think it could be Snow 23 "rusted reverse", a three star variety .
Snow says- it's very unusual die damage. Since the die pitting is isolated, it may have been caused by acid on the die.

Thanks for the help so far! With the grade being so high (MS66+Red), would that even be a possibility?

I looked up the Snow 23 Rusted Reverse that 52Raymo mentioned, as I wasn't familiar with that. https://www.indianvarieties.com/cen...901-rst-001/I think the Snow example shows the rust spots especially around the lettering, like between C and E of CENT. And since the die is pitted, the spots on the coin are raised. I don't see that same effect, nor is it in the same place on the coin, in this 66+. So, I think it's just some bad tarnish. Given that I conclude it's NOT the interesting Snow 23 variety, and with the tarnish and that little hit at 6 o'clock, this is one I'd pass on. YMMV.

If I may ask what was the price for the coin ? If the price was right it would be an interesting coin to own, no ? Yes ?

Looks like an even but natural color progression from Red to Brown. I do not think that it detracts much, or should be treated as harshly as a carbon spot. The coin is quite nice.

Marve65, what I mean is, it was graded MS66+ by PCGS, if it was rusted or had a plantchet flaw is there a possibility PCGS would even grade it that high? Here are full photos of the coin: Silverskunk, $3,240.
