John Paul Valued Member United States 232 Posts	Posted 05/25/2009 10:58 pm Hello, I have a couple of questions about WAM cents that I am hoping you folks can answer: 1) When you are hunting for these do you need a magnifying glass, or can you just look really closely - perhaps with practice? 2)How did WAMs come to be? I read that it is basically a screw up as pre 1994 they were all Wide AM and in 1994 they switched to the narrow design. But why do this? Was there someone at the mint that thought "You know what the biggest problem with pennies is today? The A and the M in America are just too far apart! Let's change it!". It just seems like odd to me to make such a tiny change - is there some reason? Thanks JP Report this Post to the Staff

biokemist6 Bedrock of the Community United States 12437 Posts	Posted 05/26/2009 1:20 pm 1)You should not need a magnifier to see them if you have decent eyesight and you can also use the designer initials as a pick up point- close to the building is a Wide AM. 2)The Wide AM design was meant for proof dies while the Close AM was meant for business strikes. All Lincolns prior to 1992 had a Wide AM. I would recommend checking out LCR, it has nice pictures and a more thorough explanation as to how this variety came to be. Report this Post to the Staff
