Well, I have an account at a credit union, Wescom, and I opened the account specifically to dump my coins, and I made that very clear to them. To make sure I wasnt any trouble, I asked them when would be good times to come in, for conveinience and how much to dump at a time. About a month ago they started being extremely rude to me, lying, rolling eyes, not talking to me, even at the counter! Here's the thing, it takes them maybe 2 minutes to help me every other day, THAT'S IT! But they were avoiding me at all costs like when the bags are filled up (maybe 2 min to replace) they would see me walk up, and they would all go into the back  but those are other stories. Now, today I dropped off some coins and when I went to give the reciept to them the teller said "Starting August we're going to start charging YOU 5%" and I was like ok........ BUT then the manager comes out of the back and says in a harassing tone "If you continue to use the coin counter we're going to close your account" She honestly couldnt have said it meaner, she might as well have spit in my face after she said that. I asked why and she said "because that's the only reason you use our services" I said I have a savings account so she pulled it up and said "you only have $250 in it, did I make my point?" here's the deal, I'm 16 what does she expect me to have? So I took the money and left. Next week I plan on dumping off a few hundred in pennies, few hundred in nickels, and LOTS AND LOTS in dimes! Then I'm gonna close my account after cashing in abunch of $1 bills with the corners torn  Sorry for my novel but I found their attitude extremely misanthropic and I mean is that really appropriate? -thanks if you read the whole thing  Edited by Cole317 06/13/2009 12:41 am

WOW! That was RUDE! Personally, I'd go over their heads on that one. You ARE a customer with an account. At a time when banks are stuggling and they should be HAPPY about a customer who's money they hold (and earn interest from). Not only that, I would think they would appreciate the power of "word of mouth", a two-way street. You either tell friends and acquaintances about how much you like their bank OR you can tell them how nasty and rude they are. An important point to make to the managers boss.
Only one mistake you made in this process. You should deposit the money from the coins into your savings account. Let it sit for a few days and then use an ATM card to make a withdrawl. That way the nasty tellers don't know what is going on. All they see you doing is making deposits and never taking money out. There's really NO REASON you should have explained to them what you're doing....it's none of their business. Their job is to serve you as a customer. All they need to know is you bring money in and deposit it. Where there money is coming from is of NO CONCERN TO THEM AND NOT THEIR BUSINESS.

It would appear you have worn out your welcome. I would do as you said and then some, ALL with a smile, when I was 16 I did not have a savings account, what ever you do, do not stoop to their level and be rude or dis-respectful, that is un-called for, enjoy.....PS: I have had problems with those machines and the tellers, they do not like "us" who use their machines to dump our undesirables. One day I waited for quite a while, when as they told me "this person dumps hundreds of dollars of halves every week", The original idea behind the machine was to have people bring in some saved up coinage and be in and out......good luck

I don't understand it. My experience here in Canada is that the banks and the people working in them don't give a rip about how much money you have in your account or why you have an account there.

I had a similar experience before, I used to dump all my halves at one branch affiliated with the bank I used to work at, usually 2-4 boxes at once a week. Eventually after the branch manager complained to the district manager several times I was banned from bringing more than three hundred dollars worth of halves to the machine, note I was always polite and even sometimestipped the teller helping me. Well at first I ignored them and brought in two boxes the next week, but they threatened to kick me out of the branch if I ever brought that many halves back again and told me I had to dump them at the branch I worked at. I was furious and decieded to get even with them. So over a months span I searched over $1000 worth of nickels and a few boxes of pennies. One day me and a friend brought in two painters buckets of pennies and nickels. Upon seeing me the branch manager came up and angrily told me that I couldnt put halves in the machine. I told him I had no halves and procceded to use the machine. I filled 12 coinbags with nickels and dimes and it took over a half hour to count them all even with the machine, as it kept getting jammed. I ended up causing a huge line, as the branch was short staffed since they needed two employees to work the machine because of the jams and the need to log and seal so many bags. Needless to say I had my revenge. Now instead of using only one branch I now use six different ones to drop off coins. This way I only see each branch once every two months or so and they dont recognize me as much and hence dont complain about the large volume of coins. I also never dump coins at the bank I get halves from, since they probably wouldnt proccess my orders if I did. If you have access to large numbers of unwanted Eisenhower dollars I suggest depositing them as a manner of revenge as they dont fit in the coin machines and must be counted by hand. -XoG

Is this a small regional bank, or a branch of a large national one? Just curious. I have accounts at two different banks and they usually go out of their way to help me. Do you think it might be some type of age discrimination, perhaps? Whatever the reason there is no excuse for them to treat anyone that way!

I agree that you should have deposited the money, or at least some of it. Going over the managers head may not do any good. I opened an account at a bank because they told me they would order halves for me. They ordered one box (which I dumped at another bank), then the manager refused to order anymore. I went over his head and the regional manager called me. No go! Now they are my dump bank. I take the money out via atm the next day. (Really ticked me off because the one box I got was a good one).

I would also write a letter to the president of the bank containing the distaste for their lack of customer service and that you regret that you will have to inform everyone you know that his company is not customer friendly and that you will be suggesting to them that they should move there accounts elsewhere. Writing a letter to the editor of a local paper about your experience will also help bring negative press to the company. Write that the bank advertises free coin counting, yet that when you tried to use the service they at first tried to charge you and then refused you service. Banks hate negative publicity, since their customer deposits are their main source of revenue, and banks with negative press tend to lose customer deposits quite rapidly. No one likes a stingy bank with unfriendly employees. -XoG

The problem with some of these Banks and Credit Unions that have Coin Star or other Coin Counting machines is that the Tellers and Managers feel that folks that dump their' unwanted coins on them are taking time out of their' very existance! They feel that it is a waste of their time to change out the bags in the machine when they are full and will avoid it if possible. I dumped a load of Copper Memorial Cents on my Credit Union the other day which required the changing of two bags in the machine. Even though there were no other customers there at the time and 5 Tellers, a Manager and several Assistant Managers/Head Tellers, you should have seen it! It was kind of comical watching everyone play a sort of musical chairs to see who lost and had to change the bags. LOL!! Frank

Thad, I agree with you wholeheartedly on everything you said! However, I would go a few steps futher! I would go over the heads of the Local Branch all the way to the upper eschelon in their Credit Union and make my feeling well known to them and that I would bend over backwards to steer good customers away from them. I would also cash in every single coin that I could get my hands on and have it deposited into my' account, then in a few days, I would go in and withdraw everything and close the account. At this point, I would normally have a few choice words for them, like where they can stick their Credit Union, Coin Counting Machine and Accounts but these aren't appropriate for a 16 year old! Wait one second it's a credit union? In that case you are a shareholder or owner of the institution, be it only 250 shares worth. Dude they are your employees!

Wow guys, thanks for all the help and suggestions! I have no idea what kind of bank it is, just one day I went there to pick up some customer rolls and saw they had the machine, so I opened an account. Now that I think of it, you guys are right in that I should have deposited it, and taken it out via atm. The funny thing is though, they have a sign by their windows saying something like "No one shall be discriminated against, rejected service upon, etc.... due to their ethnicity/race/color/age etc." This whole time I was as polite as possible, just so if this happened I win. I will get my revenge, and thanks XavierOfGreen for your suggestions, maybe I can jam the machine and make them count it...... I really dont want to screw them over and go so far as write to the paper, but I think I will write to the president of the machine and credit union regarding their sign saying "Turn your coins to cash with our coin changing machine, free to members" and how their employees obey it. thanks again for the help, I'll post an update if anything happens

Dude they are your employees! ohhhh yeaahhh  wait Is that why my parents had to do a certain thing because I wasnt a legal adult yet? It had to do with something like that, I'm gonna do a little more research  thanks for that reminder!

Big or small, the bank should be glad for your business. If you are treated rudely complain to the bigshots of the bank. A letter to the editor of your local paper should provide negative feedback for the bank. They should be nice to you. If not-GET EVEN !

Sounds like you have a plan, but remember to keep a professional manner, no matter how much they harass you. Leave them with a  on your face. I've learned in my years on this earth, that no matter how mad or aggravated I may be with the way I am being treated, leaving a situation with a smile only aggravates the other party more. On another note, this is very unprofessional of this credit union and I would be sending letters to somebody higher after closing your account.
