I bought this in the 1990s. I remember when I bought it, I thought it was just an inexpensive Type coin that I could replace some day with a better example. As I look around today, I realize it may actually be a pretty decent sample given what is available (at reasonable costs). I like to think it is Fine, maybe pushing towards VF, but with significant scratches unfortunately. Thoughts?

The Obverse I used light from one side; obverse both sides (since it is so symmetrical).

Oops. Replaced with correct reverse!

It looks like she's spitting! And yes, that is a great example for a 222 year old coin! this coin is worth about 150 dollars.

The obverse looks like the very 1804 Half Cent you describe in your post--the reverse looks like that of a Coronet/Braided Hair Large Cent, minted in the 1840s and 1850s. Do you have a picture of this Half Cent's reverse?

Either way, it reminds of me a Classic Head Large Cent I bought in 1994 for $15 when I was 9 years old. It has VG details, but some very nasty scratches on it to damage it. I still love it as my first "old" coin purchase with my own money! I am glad you are treasuring this beauty!

@Adam590- Great catch! you are correct, I put the wrong reverse in, and just replaced it.

for future posts dont post your thought on the coins grade. it can skew what some folks are thinking.

VF25 details(scratched)

if you're not planning on selling it, i'd just keep her in the set.

Agreed. I will not do that in the future.

That is my intention. I was thinking about slabbing, but with the scratches it may not be worth it.

its a pretty good couple of scratches there. its going to come back VF details (scratched) its a crosslet 4 with stems

slabbed straight graded they are about $300. I think its worth about $150-180. might be a tough sell at that price though. I dont think having the coin graded will add anything to the price as anyone looking at this that collects 1/2C would know its a VF details coin so you're really not gaining anything

here are grading costs. you'll have to decide if you want to take the risk and cost

PCGS charges a minimum of $69 for a subscription other subscription levels include grading vouchers though so you could reduce these costs. add to the subscription cost, per coin grading cost which is a minimum of $23, shipping & ins both ways (1-4 coins is $27 if the total value is under $1000)

NGC - economy grading tier is $22, plus $10 handling fee, plus $28 for shipping (1-5 coins) and insurance both ways.

ANACS - Economy - No Gold: $18 per item for items valued up to $500. plus $29 for shipping (1-4 coins) and insurance both ways.

CAC - $99 subscription ($50 grading credit), economy grading $15, gold $28, $40 shipping/handling/ins

i don't slab coins for these reasons especially the cost involved. I don't know why this is so popular today. just making the grading companies wealthy
