The State Quarter program should be a commemorative finish of the existence of quarters in the American payment system. To put America as an monetary and economical power again, the coins should be equal to Euro, so the American eliminate the quarter and change it into a coin of 20 cents. Officials of the I.M.F. and E.U. are working together with officials of the American Ministery of Finance. Citizens of the U.S.A., can you imagine payment in 20 cents nominal value coins? Have you read anything about the cease of existence of the quarters in the year 2011? This is a story I have heard in Brussels, Belgium. Edited by valutarick 06/30/2009 11:33 am

The last Twenty Cent Piece failed miserably in the united states, theres no way it will ever come back. Its more likely that a clad eagle will someday return with increasing inflation. -XoG

And the reason the 20 cent was minted? Precisely the same, to have a silver wieght matching foreign currency. Let's not forget $3 golds, and Stellas... same deal, to match up with forgeign denominations. EDIT: And I for one would welcome clad eagles!!

A change to match the Euro denominations might make sense, but making sense has not been a significant factor in U.S. coinage decisions for years.
Cents and nickels cost more to produce than they are worth. They serve an increasingly minor function in modern commerce. It would make sense to eliminate them. Not going to happen.
Dollar bills are also losing financial ground, and we could save a great deal of taxpayer money if we were to switch to dollar coins and eliminate the paper dollars. Not going to happen.
Eliminate the quarter? Not going to happen.
One of the many things we do well here in America is RESIST CHANGE.

Unless the new Twenty Cent coin was significantly different from the quarter, a change could be very problematic. The two would undoubtedly commingle for several years. It might even be necesarry to demonitize or devalue the quarter on a set date to minimize the confusion. I would not hold your breath. It is more likely that the cent, nickel, and dollar FRN will cease production, and we all know how well that is going!

I don't see adoption of the Euro by the US. Even the UK has not adopted it, and it would make a lot more sense for them to switch then the US.

As a coin collector, I'd vote against our changing to euros, or Europe changing to dollars.
The change to euros appears to have made economic sense, and was probably a "good idea," but it sure took a lot of the charm and diversity out of European coins. Any further homogenization of world-wide currency would further reduce charm and diversity.

What's most logical to me is to eventually kill off the cent, nickel and quarter. Replace them with a circulating half dollar and dollar coin, leaving 10c, 50c and dollar coins only. Twenty Cents is unnecessary, IMO.

That idea would in essence simply multiply everything by 10x. Makes sense to me, though I might want to see the return of a $500 note.

i for one would hate to see 50 cent pieces circulate again, it would make the silver ratios in boxes plumment, and without nickels and pennies coin roll hunting would be doomed. -XoG

If I'm not mistaken, the next 11 years of quarter dollars have already been planned out under the America's Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act. I'm fairly certain that many of the national parks to be represented have already been selected. This means that production of these proposed 20 cent piece won't happen until 2021 at the earliest. There is also a provision in the bill that allows another series of national park quarters to be minted for another 11 years after the first run is complete. Heck, money as we know it may not even exist by then.
