I started a collection of Jeffersons. I'm basically going through a box and selecting the best grade of each date. So obviously most of the examples I get will be worth...well...5 cents!
Because of that, it seems kind of strange to run out and buy a Dansco album for them if the album itself will cost more than the vaule of the nickels. But at the same time, I don't want to just stick them in a cheap folder because I do like to be able to see both sides of a coin. And putting them into 2x2s and storing them in a folder also seems to be overkill.
I'm sure there are others out there that have run into this. How are you nickel collectors storing your nickels?

i started to put a nickel collection together from circulation in a dansco then I said to myself this is pretty stupid putting these common circulated coins in to a dansco.
i put my circulated sets in 2x2 then I put them in album pages that's what works best for me.

I use a Dansco album. I also have the proofs, so the total coin value does greatly outweigh the album cost.
I have always felt that the Dansco was worth it, even before I decided to put proof coins in the albums. It is more than just what the coins were worth and I never consider resale value. I get pleasure from building a collection; in my opinion, the Dansco albums make it more enjoyable.

Just as an individual coin has eye appeal, so does your display of your collection! A Dansco album will add eye appeal to your entire collection.

For what it is worth, I also used a Dansco album and was collecting from circulated coins when I started. But as the collection grew I started looking for better and better coins. The Dansco album was a simple way to keep them clean and safe. Know the coins a considerably more valuable that the album. So just don't think of what you need today, but also what will work for you tomorrow. Gil

I can appreciate a collector that just wants to collect one coin of each date and mint mark in a set. To each his own. I disagree that all circulated Jefferson's are worth 5 cents and that a 2x2 is overkill. There are quite a few Jefferson's in VG condition that are worth a buck or more a piece. If you want to look at your coins on both sides, there is going to be some cost. If you don't staple your 2x2's but keep the coin in safe plastic pages, you can write the date and mint mark on the 2x2's in order and slip it in place in the pages with or without a coin in the window. This will help you see the conditions of your best examples and what nickels you still need as they will be empty. If you find a better example for one you have already just switch them and when you feel that you have the one you really want for that year and mint and are satisfied, staple it closed. These are still cheap in AU and many in BU condition but a day will come when you'll wish you had really taken your set condition a little more seriously. When you have your final set, ( I'm not finished with mine yet after 30 years of looking ) You might get that Dansco album after all. The pages will cost you as well as a couple hundred 2x2's. You might find a used Dansco folder or two cheaper at a coin shop or here in the Buy Sell Trade area of the forum or on the auction sites like ebay than the cost of the pages binder and 2x2's. I just have a hard time understanding why you would want to look at both sides of your set but not want to continue to improve it? Most collectors continuously keep upgrading when a opportunity presents itself that is a good deal.

There are a couple of ways to get a "dansco" without paying retail. 1. Of course, you can buy a used one 2. Dansco isn't the only brand. There are less expensive ones that really are about as good or as good as Dansco. They're just different colors!
Personally, I'm not a big fan of 2x2's, plastic pages and folders. It ends up costing about the same as an album. And each time you "upgrade", you go through another 2x2 - unless you're really cheap and carefully remove the staples and re-use.
And finally, if you start upgrading to MS level coins, I would start looking at air-tites or Intercept Shield holders.
Storage is very important. I have coins in air-tites that are only 3-4 times the value of the air-tite. My philosophy is that if the coin isn't properly protected, it could become worth ZERO times the value of an air-tite.

I have a few other album types for my sets: a Whitman Classic I bought about 20 years ago for my IHCs, another Whitman album (looks like a book, copyright 1960) that I picked up for next to nothing at a coin shop for my fledgling Merc set, and one of those Official US Mint albums for my Franklins. I like the Whitmans fine. The Franklin album seems to be a bit on the cheap side, so I will be changing out of it soon enough. That's why I went ahead and ordered my first Dansco online for my Jefferson collection. I found a good deal for a display one on ebay and it should arrive later in the week. If I like the way it looks I might just transfer ALL my sets to Dansco, or at least the Franklins. I do plan on continuously upgrading my Jefferson set...that is why I want to see both sides of the coins. I also have a decent LHC set in those really old Whitman folders that are in desperate need of a transfer, and maybe the Dansco is the key there as well.
