Hello,
I have found a large cent for sale for around $3. It is in horrible condition. It can't tell date. It may be a coronet or coronet w/ braided hair. It is dented. I can't imagine it being worse. Baaaaaaaad.

What do you think it is worth?

I say save the $3 for a few Wheaties or maybe an ice cream cone.
Rest in Peace

I usually tend to stay away from hideous coins. If you add up a bunch of "junk" purchases of $5 here, $3 here, $8 there you could have a nice, valuable, pleasent to look at coin in your collection instead of a page of junk. Mt $.025
Rest in Peace

I apologize if it wasn't clear that my last post was in jest. I agree that it is certainly not worth $3, and would encourage the OP not to purchase. I do find the coin amusing though. If coins could talk, imagine the stories that one would tell?

Would be a great start to a type set of like coins, I have seen a type set being put together with all the coins having holes. I personally don't think the coin has any value but.. Beauty is in the eye of the beerholder..

Nope. I bought coins like this. Later, I've regreted buying every single one of them.
Take it only if it's free, or face .

OK, there are tons of less-than-beautiful large cents on ebay, buy it now for ten bucks shipped free that, while not great, are light years ahead of that one. Really for around $20 you can get a really decent example of these.
There's decent well worn and circulated and then there's crusty busty's like that one...I'd skip it.

Even the ugly ducklings need love too.
Maybe not 3 dollars worth of love , but none the less...
I might think about starting an ugly book. (Woo-Hoo another exasperated look from my wife)

When I taught 10th grade US History, I would bring in coins similar to this just to show the kids how big cents used to be. This way, I didn't care if they got lost or stolen.

Well,
I'm not going to buy it. I'm a bit short of cash anyway.
Thanks for the help. I would buy it for my US type set, but I can't tell which type it is.

Thanks all.
