Just purchased a Shield nickel, dated 1866 with marking of rare. This nickel has no rays, I understand that only 1867 Shield nickels had rays started then. Is this why this is rated rare? Need better understand.

I hope this is the correct forum as this is my first post.

Respectfully,

Welcome to the forum Jack.

Sounds to me like you have a "doctored" coin. Shield nickels with rays only occurred in 1866 (on all of them) and 1867 (some of them).

Your 1866 would indeed be rare without rays. Never heard of one though. Hope you didn't spend too much and I'd get my money back if I could.

to determine the coins authenticity. It does sound fishy but we would still like a pic.

I agree with clembo.

There were only with rays for 1866.

as stated elsewhere, perhaps the date is worn to the point where it looks like a 6.

Is this the same very heavily worn one that has had pictures posted on a couple other forums?
