I got a 2007 Mint Set a while back and put it away. In recent days I took it out, and I spotted this coin.

An ugly way to ruin a set. I wonder if you complained to the Mint if it would do anything except fall upon deaf and apathetic ears. That's never happened to me because I don't buy from the Mint.

I too am sorry your 2007 Mint set has the ear mark of the way things are and have been for a while, down yonder at the Mint......

Did this happen over time or was it in this shape when you received it from the mint?

I would contact the mint and send pics. As any other business customer satisfaction should #1 priority. You will probably have to cover your own shipping. I would be surprised if they don't replace it.

I'm guessing this is how I received it, but I could be wrong since I didn't really look at it before I put it into my safe. But does the mint replace items nearly 2 years old?

They won't replace that...come on, it's the Mint. LOL

Always inspect your sets immediately! I suggest also putting these in ziplocks with a dessicant pack and a nice BU cent. I also like to clean the cent with a brillo pad, rinse and dry well. It makes a nice sacrificial coin to absorb sulfides that may get in the bag.

I would say that 2007 Proof sets are long gone from the mint. I could be wrong, but then anything could be possible.
I think the mint would likely say its been to long and should have been reported sooner.
Sorry that your set is not of the quality it should be.

Not a chance on getting an exchange, the 2007 Mint Sets have been sold out at least since the 2008s came out. Those spots are typically caused by planchet rinse and sometimes form over time, it is entirely possible that they were not present when you got the set(similar situation with ASEs and milk spots)

Excellent advice and I will add to this, inspect your sets once a year or so to make sure that the environmental storage is not affecting the coins either. I just cannot understand people that buy a proof or mint set, then put it away and not see the light of day again for 20 or 30 years I do not see that as collecting, more like hoarding. A collection should be enjoyed from time to time

Hello Thad,

Has this brillo pad and BU cent method ever been discussed on here before? Doing a CCF search and can't find where you've talked about it before.

(edit)
Oh, and forget my previous question...I missed the part where you said a dessicant pack *and* a BU cent.
