Last time it was a Turkish 5 para I could not positively identify.
Now, I can't even be sure of the denomination of this one.

It is bronze, large (37.8mmŲ x 1.6mm) weight approximately 15 grams.

Date is AH 1223 (1808/1809CE) and where I would expect to see a regnal year it seems to say 75 -too large to be that? I thought then maybe that was the denomination but 75 is a most unusual denomination in any currency.

So I am stumped. Maybe it is not even a coin but some sort of medallion.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks
Jeff

This coin looks almost exactly like a Turkish 5 Kurush (KM #599) except the 5 Kurush is silver, not bronze. I have not found a similar issue in bronze. Perhaps a comtemporary forgery? Anyway, I would definitely think this is Turkish.

I agree this is KM#599 5 Kurush low grade silver at 0.1700, weight varies between 13-16 grams. I read the date as AH1223/25 (1810), Mahmud II.

Thank you for your replies. You are right and I have found some pictures of some others of these of these.
So easy to go off on the wrong track. I assumed bronze from brownish toning, speck of coppery colour showing through on a rim dent and verdigris. But 0.17 silver would look very much like that.
And, downstroke on 2 is not well defined and I misread it as 7.

I notice it is called 5 piastres elswhere.

Also, some for sale on ebay are 1223/25 and seller gives date as 1833 (and 1224/26 as 1834). I don't think that is right but I wonder if there is scope for debate there?

thanks again
Jeff

About the date: 1223AH is the accession year of Mahmud II. This corresponds with 1808AD. Your coin was struck in the 25th regnal year of Mahmud II, which corresponds with 1832/1833

Regnal year 1 is the same as the Accession Year 1223/1=1808

Accession year+Regnal Year-1=date of issue....

AH1223/25= 1223+25-1= AH1247= 1831(6/12/1831-5/30/1832)
