We had a "Bolivian Bonanza" walk in the door today. A guy came in with his fiancee who is Bolivian and her father who spoke no English was with them. Wanted to sell his coins. Some pretty decent stuff in there compared to what I usually see and mostly Bolivian silver with a smattering of Peruvian and a few others. A lot of it holed and will end up as scrap unfortunately but there were 8 older 8 reales that we'll have to research.

I don't do much with world coins but picked these up just to say I had them.

1783 2 Reales from Peru.

1808 1 Real from Bolivia

Obviously not sterling examples but an interesting addition to the clembo collection.

clembo Hello - Nice coins especially the 1R which is a double strike on ONE side only. It stuck in the screw press. The 2R is common. But both appear to be real which is good news.

But my real common is about drilled coins. DO NOT automatically consign them as scrap. Some Mexican coins are ONLY known with holes. But of even more interest to fellows like me - not all holes were for jewelry type mounts. Many were period cancellations of forgeries. Contemporary Counterfeits are always worth more than melt often many times more. So just be sure.

If you have any doubts (especially with Spanish American coins) just post pictures and send me a note. Of my best counterfeits at least 1 in 10 has a drill hole.

Swamperbob,

Thanks for the great insight. This is not mine (our) regular fare at work.
There were over 100 holed coins in this lot. Unfortunately they are at work. My boss owns them but I'll see if I can get a few examples for your opinion.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I'll put a bug in his ear so to speak.

clembo The position of a drill hole can in some cases give clues to the reason it was done in the first place.

Look at the design and then the hole or holes. Two holes dead center and you have a button. One hole dead center and you have a British Bank cancellation of the colonial era.

One hole top center in relation to the picture on the coin and you probably have a pendant but one at the bottom of the coin would be either a cancellation or a protest against the ruler. French coins are often seen with holes positioned to stand the King on his head in protest. A hole through the date or denomination or on the sides of the coin are likely cancellations. If the coin has edge notches or scratches and a hole it is also likely a cancellation.

But in any even check the coins and if you want send me photos. I never mind looking at coins and can give you an answer in a few seconds on most coins.

Post the pictures here if you can, we can't let swamperbob have all the fun. (LOL) I would love to see the 8's regardless of condition. Like Swamperbob said, don't consign them to the melt bucket without a good going over. The more I learn on this forum about spanish colonial and early mexico, central american and south american coins, the more I realize there is so much to learn.
I like the doubling on the 1 real, makes for an interesting coin.
