I'm considering purchasing this coin. Any opinions? I don't think it looks to be cleaned or dipped. What would you grade it or pay for it?

Here's the grading criteria from our CCF Coin Facts page (clicked on the left of this screen).

Twenty Cent Piece General Grading Standards
G4 Good - LIBERTY on shield obliterated. Letters and date legible.
VG8 Very Good - One or two letters in LIBERTY may show. Other details will be bold.
F12 Fine - At least three letters of LIBERTY show.
VF20 Very Fine - LIBERTY completely readable, but partly weak.
EF40 Extremely Fine - LIBERTY sharp. Only slight wear on high points of the coin.
AU50 About Uncirculated - Slight trace of wear on breast, head and knees.
MS60 Uncirculated - No trace of wear. Light blemishes.
MS63 Select Uncirculated - Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster may be impaired.

From this criteria, I would say this coin is close to a VG8.

There were 133,290 minted, (not too many).

I, personally would not pay more than $250 for this coin.

Good luck!

(The 20 cents coins are a tough bunch to collect. Most are rare and almost all are very worn).

IMO:
G-4 obverse.
G-6 reverse.

Since it is the CC, and a scarcer date, I could live with the lower grade.
(I just hate the 1875 S, common as all heck.)

I'd put it at a G-6. From what I can tell the LIBERTY is gone. I wouldn't pay more the $300.00 but that's just me. I know the Red Book has it being worth more but when the price gets that high I have to really want something and 20 cent pieces aren't really my thing at the moment.

G6 overall. I like the CC's. they have shown some real nice appreciation over the years and this coin should be no exception. by the way, looks original medium grey and not cleaned ;-)

I'm in the market for one, and this one is going for $350, which is less than The Red Book or Coin Values Magazine. The store has it listed as VG-8, but I think I will agree with most people here about the G condition. If I sent this to PCGS I don't think it would come back VG since there don't appear to be any letters on the shield. Hmmmm... I'm still trying to build my 1875-CC set, that's why I'm interested in this coin.

If it helps, there is one at Harlan Berk's website that they're asking $450.00 for. They give it a VG8 but I'm not sure it would be that high. If you're into CC's it seems like the one you're looking at is a decent value.
