I got this V nickel out of a collection. It was in the "S" slot. After comparing it with my D and S I am not sure which it is. Help please.

fioti That is what I think also, but I didn't want to jump to any conclusions especially with the significant difference in value involved.

I believe it's an S as well. Looks to have some damage around the mm resulting in the flattening of the mm. You can see the tail of an S unlike a D.

vermontensium Thanks for the reply. I think I am going with the "S" concensus. Very suprised to find it in the batch.

What you have there is a coin from the little known Rectangle Mint.

Looks like an S to me honestly. Can't say for sure. I collect liberty heads, but have never purchased an S mint coin.

To me, it appears as a D attempted at deceiving collectors as an S.
I had bought one, sight-unseen from a dealer than looked nearly identical... and was definitely not an S.

I hope for the best, but I really have my doubts as you can see the shape of the D in the first link... but then again you can see an S as well.

It is possible the mintmark took a hit and we are left with what we see now.
But as a VG coin with a sharp reverse, it looks a little odd this particular part took a hit like that.

Looking at my 12-S's, the upper left of the S is well rounded.
You can pretty much see the both serifs of the D in that picture.

I think it's an "S". (But it could be an altered D. I never even thought about that...)

A 1912 S V Nickel to compare to:

paul I like that "rectangle mint" I wonder what I could get for it on ebay

oimcoins That is exactly why I posted it here I initially had the same impression when I compared it to my 12S which is about the same condition with a much nicer mint mark. I posted the closest photos I could get of the mint mark so you guys could help me. Either way I am not really out any money as I bought a collection willed to my Mother-in-law at her cost that was way under valued, and I already have a 12S in my album.

Moe145 Very nice 12S

johnny54321 Thanks

Moe:
I'd have your '12S checked.

It may be just me, but the background on that S looks likda funky.

I'm cautiously optimistic - it'd be a lot of work to machine a "D" into an "S" for a coin which won't be worth much over $100.

Disclaimer: not much experience with these.

I reviewed several same year Ds and Ss.

the S seems to always be a little closer to right-off-center beneath dot than the D, which consistently seems to be a little left off-center.

using that criteria, I suspect it's a mashed D.
