Hi all, I'm thinking about putting together an 1875 CC set: Dime (2 varieties), 20c, quarter, half dollar, Trade dollar, half eagle, eagle, double eagle. Any one have any thoughts about this? It would be a decent investment and I've never put together a set like this before. Thanks! Edited by Gothic Florin 05/10/2010 9:06 pm

That would be a cool accomplishment. Your smart going with the more common date CC's. Should be able to pick up some nice coins without breaking the bank Now, if you went with 1876CC's, well, that 20 Cent Piece might be a challenge

Those gold pieces will be tough to find in any condition. Best of luck. Bring back photos..:)

Yeah, I was looking through the Red Book and the 1876 CC set looked good until I saw that I would have to pay over $100,000 for the 20C! I could just live in the woods and eat berries for a year to save up for it!

It's a cool idea but that would break my bank!

This would be an impressive set for sure! Do not forgot to post photos during and after the process!

Even if I lived in the woods and ate berries (and I don't think my wife would go for it either...though she does know I'm a coin nut...) I would have a hard time justifying $100,000 for the 1876 CC 20 center!
I think you should go for your 1875 CC set! A great way to collect! It would also be a great display item for your trophy room!

1875-CC quarter is also quite tough, right?

1875-CC quarter is a bit tougher with a mintage of 140,000 but still much higher than the mintages of 1871-1873(no 1874-CCs). An 1875-CC set is an awesome goal I have thought about doing something similar(not all CCs though) because that is my birth year minus 100.

I have since picked up the 10 cents below wreath in XF and the Trade dollar in VG. I will try to get some pics up.

I applaud your bravado in going after such a set. It doesn't seem impossible nor prohibitively expensive for many collectors. I'd love to see pix of such a set.

I'd have to live in the woods more than a year!

What are your thoughts on grades on these? I bought the 2 dimes as XF and the half and Trade dollar as G. There are plenty of 20 pieces out there, but the quarter is going to be really tough. I'm probably going to have to put the gold series on hold since they aren't cheap either!

I would grade the Half G4 and the Trade dollar G6. The CC above wreath I'd put at XF40 and the other would go XF45ish maybe 50 but looks to have signs of cleaning. The luster also looks disrupted. Nice start!
