Sometimes toning is nice, color and champagne like macmercury mentions,but this coin would probably look better without it . IMHO

That is absolutely gorgeous toning  The mottled pattern is indicative of Mint Set toning. That is original toning and very desirable  Edited by biokemist6

In my limited numismatic background, I have quickly moved from "toning makes coins look dirty & ugly" to toning adds character & beauty (exceptions abound, of course).
This one is no exception, I like it a lot. Lots of color and while a bit speckled, it is an even speckling, if that makes sense.

I personally like it. Especially the rainbow toned part around the top rim on the reverse.

The 1947-58 Mint Sets had cardboard holders that contained the coins instead of the more familiar cello packs. This cardboard would occasionally produce beautiful toning as seen on the Franklin. |

Thanks for all the opinions. I personally thought it had a lot of eye appeal and I would have purchased it if it were not for the fact that I bought a couple of somewhat pricey SLQ's recently.
And thanks for the clarification biokemist, the seller mentioned it was a result of Mint Set toning but I didn't know what exactly to look for.

I don't like that toning. I makes it look like the coin has corrosion or something.

It looks nice enough, but I wouldn't much (if any) premium over a white MS-66 for it.

I try to avoid toning, and I actually prefer nice, worn coins.
