I would say excessive die polishing caused that. I have a Mercury dime with a "broken nose" i.e. the bridge of the nose was polished away. |

well, if I am not mistaken its a 7/0 tailfeather variety. I cant actually see the arrow shaft but it looks like its a long nock and that would either make it a B1 Morgan or a 7/8 TF or a 8TF so since its 7 TF's it knocks out the 8Tf thing and since the nostril isn't completely polished away (which would be a VAM-84) it is a 7/0 Morgan. Not exactly sure which version it is but will let you know soon. Remember 1878 is my specialty, if you could zoom in on the arrow shaft I would tell you for sure. If it doesn't have a long nock then none of the above applies

It shows all the attributes of this VAM, even all the cracks match. When I saw it was in fact a long nock I knew it was a 7/8 or B1 and since it had the "Broken nostril" it was either a B1 rerse (which would be a VAM-79 or VAM-81 and it didn't show the disconnected leaf for those VAM's). I knew it wasn't a B1 so it had to be a 7/8 and since there are no extra tail feathers showing, it had to be a 7/0 TF variety. Anyhow here is the pages from the book on this Morgan and as you can see every part matches your coin.   |

But I have studied every 1878 I have ever come in contact with, even ones I have seen on the web and I have an extensive collection of 1878 VAM's (about like SuperDave does with 1921's) |

its the 1878 Morgan dollar 7/8 attribution guide. Thats the bad thing about collecting 1878's, you need a whole library full of books, theres the 7/8 attribution guide, the 8TF attribution guide, the encyclopedia of morgan and Peace dollars then you have some 1878's that are listed in the Elite Clashed Morgan dollars book also. I have each one of these books and look through them frequently comparing coins with the book Edited by Bryan1315

oh man the 7/8 attribution guide is a hard one to track down, I searched for months and finally found one on a website (that is now sold out of them), the encyclopedia of Morgan dollars and the 8tf attribution guide I think I got off of ebay. The 7/8 book has been out of print for awhile and is just super hard to find, there is talk that they will make a reprint of it because demand is so high but no telling how long that will be |

I find it hillarious that people think I know what I am doing when it comes to this stuff, I didn't erven know what a VAM was when I first started coming to this forum with my very first question (it was about doubling I saw on my 1878 8TF which is now attributed as a VAM-16). If it wasn't for the few people here that helped me out with that coin I probably wouldn't even have ever started collecting VAM's at all. I had a pretty good collection of morgans and once the VAM bug hit me I started searching through them all and found quite a few in my collection. But the more I found out about the 1878 VAM's the more intrigued I became and I have been running rampant on every 1878 VAM I can find (mostly in MS condition) there are more 1878-P VAM's than in any other Morgan series and I find each and every one of them fascinating |

I have one year invested in my VAM learning effort. That's all. I think you and I share an obsessive sort of attitude towards learning - in the last few months, how many hours have you spent looking at, and studying, coins? I thought so.  Me, too. |

Believe it or not Bryan, I didn't really pay attention to VAM's either until I read some of YOUR posts. Before that I just thought that Morgans were beautiful coins. I had already put together a complete Franklin set and turned my attention to Morgans...I knew of VAM's but never paid much attention to them. Now, like you, I am hooked..although I haven't concentrated on any particular kind yet.. |
