Our dealer has a big bowl of circulated wheat cents at 4 cents each and a big tub of circulated buffaloes at 20 cents each. Yours probably has something similar. It can be a lot of fun to go through those; just make a list of the dates and mintmarks you don't have before you start.

It can take quite a bit of time, so you'll get to talk to the other people in the shop while you're there. Our local shop is a social place.

and AndrewC yeah the coin shop I went to is just a little local one he doesn't have much but he just started his buisness and he's pretty young, early 20's and seems to know a lot about coins. The wheaties he did have were just laying in a little case and were all in plastic/paper things, and a silver junk drawer, and some IHC and other random coins, I am thinking about going back when I get paid again because it is pretty spendy but in the mean time going to this other coin shop I found in my area that seems like a pretty high grade coin shop :D I'm stoked.

I'm a college student paying for it outta pocket, with a part time job. Not to much lol.

I'm really interested in cents though I have almost all dates for wheaties and all from 1959-1998 :) anything else cheap? I have some Presidential dollars, and some Barber half dollars, and some walking liberties. oh and a few Kennedy's. nothing special though lol

Take a step over to "The Dark Side." (i.e. Foreign Coins) That's where my (small) budget has taken me and I am having a blast. So much to look at and learn about, etc. I Search the cash registers at work for U.S. circulated stuff (including silver.) I do collect wheats. I also love Peace dollars and have only 2, but they are graded coins and are beautiful. Ahhh. It keeps me with my foot in the door for U.S. and I get my treasure hunting fun in the foreign coin bucket at the local dealer as well as some lots off of ebay. That got me going.

I am finding myself (though still quite new to collecting) gravitating towards certain coins (types and countries) and find myself wanting better grade examples of those coins, working toward a true "collection" as opposed to random bunches of coins.

My advice as a new collector is to look at as many coins as you can get your hands on and see where your interests lead you. I found myself quickly dissatisfied with low grade examples of coins I liked and now I am starting to focus on obtaining better examples of the coins I am interested in, even though it is a much slower route to take.

I got a Krause coin catalog from the public library and it has been invaluable. I'll buy one eventually, but until then... Then I got a 5lb bulk world coin lot off of ebay. I looked up all 500ish coins. It took a while, but it was a lot of fun. I learned a lot and I got to hold many, many different types of coins in my hands and get a real feel for them. As a result, I now am better able to focus my collecting by excluding what I am not interested in just as much as I was able to find things I liked.

Anyway, I am rambling. Welcome to this great hobby and to the forum. Have a good time collecting and above all... collect what you like and what makes you happy.

Nazarene - that's funny you say something about foreign coins, I have a local 711 like market in my town called Everyone's Market, my boyfriend has known the guy for about 11 years so I talk to him every time I go in to buy something, I mentioned my interest in coins and he said he'd keep an eye out for coins at his store for me and save them till next time I come in. So every time I come in I ask him if he found any coins for me, and last night he gave me a handful of foreign coins, he usually give me some Canadian pennies in the batch but this time there was one Canadian penny, and one Canadian dime, and two 5$ coins from Mexico? not quite sure what the Mexican ones are oh and he also through in a 2007 chucky cheese token lol. I have a Discovery Zone token but those are the only tokens I have, maybe you can enlighten me on the 5$ Mexican coin? I will take pictures if needed, thanks :D

I can agree that most circulated foreign coins I've seen are real bargains! Please post pictures of your next purchase. We'd love to see them!
