Just be careful before selling it off to the same guys that appraise it.

Can you tell us how you came to obtain this? Or is it impolite to ask (as a newbie on this forum, that is an honest question)?

It came into my possession as part of a settlement from a law suite with an ex partner. A very long story.

Shadow, thanks for the input. I am not in any hurry to sell and if it is a valuable piece I would probably do Stacks or similar.

Southerngent - please keep us informed of what happens with this piece. Sounds like a unique piece of Americana and a great story. We'll be anxious to hear what you find out. Good Luck.

It sounds to me to be an "electro-type" copy. I have some "1793" copied large cents that have been determined to be 150 year old + electro-type copies (made around 1820-1850?).

The seams are pretty apparent on the edge and the details are muted since it's a molded copy of two sides of one or two different coin(s) put together.

Still pretty cool! A great piece of history.
(I'm on the road now but will post pics when I get home.)

They did strike a few "die trial" eagles in copper but it would make no sense to cut down a coin considered to be considerably valuable even back then and mate it up with a common large cent to create a relatively valueless fake fantasy. It think it is probably made up out of a fake copper eagle.

very interesting! From what I understand, seam screams fake and an obvious electrotype. Plus, the objective of many counterfeits is to deceive and make money so it COULD be doing its job.

The only logical explanation of a counterfeit I can think of is that some clever person wanted to create some controversy and make some money off it. I don't know why the people at the mint would electrotype their own coins.

My questions are:

What is the diameter of the coin and (if this is even possible) what is the diameter of the obv. and rev. DESIGNS? The gold eagle diameter is 26.8 mm. while the large cent is 27 mm.

Would this discrepancy in the diameters cause any problems?

Is there any evidence of filing on the edge to attempt to hide the seam?

I just think its too cool to be true.

I still do not think it is legit. I hope it is, but do not think it is. Instead of getting info from collectors, you should send it to ANACS. They will do all the research for you and slab it if it is real. Win win. Worst thing that could happen here is misinformation. I believe if such a coin existed for real, there would be additional pieces known (regardless of how or why it was made... the mint rarely made 1 of a kind coins... even back then "experimental" coins had multiple created)

If I had something that could be as rare as this, the ONLY place I would worry about having it looked at is ANACS. Most individuals will be speculating unless it is found in a book somewhere. Send it to the pros and have them prove what it is. It would be worth the investment if it is legit and you wont be out much if it aint.

My 2 "legit" cents.

The obverse does indeed look like that of a $10 gold piece. Send it to ANACS, if it comes back genuine, Heritage Coin Auctions.
Wow if genuine! Good Luck!

Well, given that this thread has seen no action in more than eighteen months (the resurrection of which, mind you, is a serious breach of online etiquette), I would call it "pretty conclusive" that the coin originally discussed was not even remotely real. Otherwise, it would have been at some point a numismatic headline, known to all collectors as a significant discovery.

So, I would (with all due respect) offer the theory that the original coin, as well as yours, is not "real."
