starmanuk New Member United Kingdom 7 Posts	Posted 01/10/2011 4:47 pm I have a bag full of old coins mostly British which I was given by my sisters friend about 25 years ago. I just like old or foreign coins. I wouldnt describe myself as a coin collector but my late father used to collect coins so maybe I take it after him anyway theres a mix of six pences and florins etc which I believe are not worth much, an arabic coin 50 dinar I think and various others. I have a badly worn on one side australian half-penny form 1915 which I recon might be worth about Â£30? based on research though I believe they are rare but where in wide circulation and overuse so hard to find a good one which I believe would be worth around $1000. The main one though is the Australian one penny from 1915 which I have. This one appears to be from the heaton mint with the little H thing under the scroll. Thing is I didnt realie the grade mattered because I saw one on ebay and it was not worth much so I put it back in the bag and thought no more of it but I now know that the quality of a coin mostly is what makes it valuable and/or the year and maybe the amount in circulation. The one I saw in the australian museum isn't even as nice as mine. My 1915 one penny is in beautiful condition and looks new its colour is a very dark brown and appears consistant throughout it has no visible damage. Haven seen ones not as nice looking as mine being offered for 4500 australian dollars I was wondering what you opinion was? Would making a scan of coin be a good idea using a common scanner? obviously I will not take my brothers advice and clean it not unless I want to completely devalue it ofcourse lol. thanks :) Report this Post to the Staff

starmanuk New Member United Kingdom 7 Posts	Posted 01/10/2011 9:05 pm hi latman100 thanks for your response. I have taken your advice and have uploaded some scans of the coin. The scans don`t always help because the coin looks better than this but its reasonable. Some of the little marks don`t actually exist as can be seen by comparing the images, now I know what you guys mean about trying to take good pictures. The tone is quite even in the coin even though I think it looks like its slightly changing. The Heaton mark is there but just does not show up very well on the scan. I have also uploaded the 1915 half penny, one side looks fine and the other side has faded that much its hardly there lol anyway not many of those in perfect condition circulating as far as I know but they are still rare apparently. Thanks in advance for any help and advice regarding quality of coin and valuation estimates. VG $4, F $15, VF $50, EF $200, aUnc $750, Unc $2,250, choice Unc. $4,500, Gem (that would be MS65) $7,500. Although I do not collect Australian coins, I have never seen a 1915H in a higher grade than VF, except at auction. Strange! An Aussie who does not collect Australian coins! Where do you think the grade of my 1915 australian one penny would be? on a quick note the dots around the inner ring of the coin look fine on coin but the scan shows them up as looking a bit faded which they are not. the scan does not do the coin justice I'm afraid.what should the natural colour of the coin be? what are peoples opinion as to value and grade of my one penny please? the coin is in excellent condition in my opinion for its age. latman100 Pillar of the Community Australia 1040 Posts	Posted 01/11/2011 7:13 pm The colour looks good to me, I would be very happy to have that coin in my collection. Colour ranges from full blazing red for a mint state example, to deep chocolate brown. Judging from the scans I would grade it as good very fine (gVF). There is wear evident on the tip of the moustache, around the kings eye, on the diamond in the centre of the bands on the crown, and following that line up to the orb on the crown as well as on the robe. If you think that the scanner is making things look worse than they are, take it to a coin dealer and ask if they could grade it for you. Report this Post to the Staff

I would say the colour looks a very dark chocolate brown if I had to describe it much darker than the scan shows, it seems to brighten it up for some reason. There is not really any marks on the coin for the eye to see maybe some light superficial ones. Obviously I was hoping the coin might be in the higher price bracket. The standard catalogue of world coins 1901-2000 has the following prices 1915H (Mintage 1,320,000)F=1.75 VF=8.50 XF=160 UNC=1,400 BU=2,300 I take it you dont think its worth much then based on the scans? the coin has no dents or damage. I dont really see the things you mention when looking at it but maybe you have a good eye for these sort of things after all you are a coin collector but when I look at it with the naked eye I can hardly notice anything wrong with it. First thing I thought when I saw it first time was how great it looked for such an old coin. I take it uncirculated is out of the question them? does it need to be a reddish colour to be of that quality? Thanks for your help on this appreciated. latman100 Pillar of the Community Australia 1040 Posts	Posted 01/12/2011 12:28 am Krause is way undervalued for Australian coins. The latest 2011 Guide to Australian Coins and Banknotes puts the value at $70 for VF and $300 for EF. I believe your coin falls in between these values. But like I said, it is much better to have a coin in hand to grade it, grading from pictures can be hit and miss, especially from scans rather than photographs. I note also that you are from the UK. If you can, find a dealer that is familiar with Australian grading standards. British standards are stricter than Australian standards. Report this Post to the Staff

starmanuk New Member United Kingdom 7 Posts	Posted 01/12/2011 01:56 am Australian grading standard? ah so each country grades different, mmh interesting so there is no universal grading,thought maybe there would be. will keep that in mind latman100 though I have only found 3 coin dealers in Glasgow and none have any websites. vast majority are london 400 miles away. Thanks DVCollector yes it is a nice looking coin.
