Just getting into the World coin scene. What is the best direction if I want to put together a collection of FAO coins?

I'm assuming that FAO refers to the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation?

Hi, amida, and welcome to the "World coin scene"! Someone here might give you an insight, and we have a retired FAO official, Angielczyk, who used to frequent the forum. Hopefully he'll be able to give you an advice. Once I stopped at my local coin shop and there was a big lot of Indian FAO coins someone just unloaded, but that was just I got lucky.

Am I correct in thinking that these coins were not typically minted for circulation? What got me interested is that I found a couple in change here in the US (of all places)!

Quote: Am I correct in thinking that these coins were not typically minted for circulation? Not necessarily! Most FAO coins were issued for circulation. I believe (and I could be wrong) the issue was (partially) funded by the program. Or certain portion of the revenues went to the program. Something like that.

Good day I used to be the person resposible for the FAO coin programme until I retired three years ago. Until that tome it was possible to buy FAO coind from the Organization directly, However the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) disposd of all its stock of coins and is no longer involved in coins. FAO coins have been issued since 1968 and were issued both as commemorative coins and for circulation. Coins were issued by some 120 countries over the years. If you would like more detailed information please PM me and I can forward some literature that I have. With regard to places to purchase the coins ebay is one place. I have also seen them at fairs around Europe and there are a number of dealers in Morth America that purchased stock from FAO Many of the coins were put into albums and or on boards and sold to collectors over the years. I have some duplicates of these and if interested you can PM me. As regards the Uruguay coin shown by Fioti this was issued in 1967 as a circulating silver coin. A copper pattern version was also issued at the same time. I believe that some were in fact counterstamped in 1997 but not under the auspices of FAO and so technically they are not really FAO coins.

Angielczyck. I was hoping you would respond. Any info you could share would be greatly appreciated! Can't PM from my phone but when I'm at a computer I will. Hope all is well and that the situation in Egypt does not escalate across your borders.
Peace,
Amida

Amida, you won't be able to PM just yet, whether from computer or any other gadget. Only after a member establishes himself and gets up to 50 posts (s)he get's the private emailing privilege.
Besides, we would like to have discussions in the open so other people could learn!

Here is the introduction to some promotional material prepared for the FAO panels and boards in 1974. It gives a broad overviw of the programme. If you are interested I can upload some photos of the boards and albums.

I had never heard of FAO coins until I purchased a collection that had many FAO coins. There were lots of uncirculated rolls of countries that had been put away for 30 years! Now I am adding more FAO coins. At some point I may put duplicate rolls on ebay but for now I am just enjoying them. Great info in this thread with the FAO documents.
