I voted yes, but I really only keep a roll of each date/mintmark combination in BU red condition. I don't anticipate selling them for a huge profit but will likely give them away to nephews, nieces, etc.

Yes worth keeping. Just like the silver 'junk' from the 1960s! Always nice to have tucked away. Those were just held onto as well!

If someone wants to bring hoarding up to today's standard, some guy bought a million face nickels direct from the mint last year. Will the zinc shield stand the test of time? I'm sure the mint is scared knowing if they move to a steel cent something funny is going to happen with the penny supply.

Yes a million in nickels. He is or was a hedge fund guy in TX. A big PM at least gold investor as well. I think the plan for the steal penny is to coat them to appear the same from what I read. Probably the same that happened in the 80s when pennies were debased the last time. I was working in a bank then and some shortages but ok. Not like the 60s and silver. Of course many more coins involved plus no plastic!

I haven't started doing this, but maybe I should. I used to go through rollsof cents regularly and picked a few old wheaties, which I saved. Also 43's steelies. But I think you woudl have to accumulate a huge amount of cents to get enough copper to make it worthwhile. I don't think I will start this. Silver, yes; copper, no.

I recently started getting pennies from the bank. Used to get boxes, but now they charge, so I get individual rolls. Just emptied some of the rolls into a water bottle. I noticed a wheatie in one end and checked to see if others in the roll. The whole roll was wheaties and another roll was all except for two. I later went through more rolls and found I had a total of fourteen rolls of wheaties. I will check them later. First two rolls yielded 1935d, 1919, 1916. Mostly 1940s and 1950s. Hoping other rolls have some surprises! I will be saving 1982 and earlier copper. There are probably easier ways to get copper like statues, trays, etc. I really want to look for silver, but bank does not get halves and dollars, so not sure what to do. Federal Reserve says I have to go to my bank. Any suggestions?

I started saving '82's and earlier over ten years ago. They are stored in several old Absolut Vodka bottles and sorted by year in 5 year increments. Wonder what the future will bring for them?

I think I have read that they are bought and sold on ebay. I would just keep them if it were me.

Quote: I just opened my latest box of $25.00 and the box was 100% zinc. The copper hoarding is moving into large scale operations somewhere!

I just looked through four boxes of cents and found seven coppers, one steel and another LWC. Not like the old days, but enough to keep me going.
Deja vu all over again.

Quote: define hoarding Saving quantities of an item far in excess of current or likely future needs. An 80-year-old with 1000 rolls of buttwipe is hoarding, unless they have some serious diarrhea.

I do not specifically collect pennies currently, of any year, but used to as a child. My dad has a 100 year old glass milk jar that is capable of holding $100 in pennies. I'm quite certain, that the pennies that are currently in the jar, are the same pennies that have been in the jar for quite a few years, as he relied on my to roll them every year, and put them towards our yearly vacation. Now, something I did do today, besides buying some silver, was buy a 10lb bar of cooper (lol) from a site that had been recently reccomended to me. It's copper, it was $60, I wanted it to go with the 1lb silver eagle

They just seem like something else to have piled up somewhere in the house when I am trying to reduce the "stuff" that is laying around. So... no, I do not save copper, zinc, or nickel. At age 62, I ain't got the time to wait around for this stuff to become valuable!

Yes. While I haven't gone out of the way to obtain pennies I have separated them and just will keep them. You never know what will happen. I just think the last 2 real forms of money in circulation pennies and nickels are worth to hold on to. They may or may not amount to more than face but I guess they remind me of how we kept the silver coins back in the 1960s!
