What's Up With 2000-D Nickels? - Coin Community Forum

CaptainFwiffo Pillar of the Community United States 4132 Posts	Posted 07/04/2011 10:30 pm Why are these so shiny? They look like Canadian coins. Some of the late 90s Denver nickels are like this too, but not the Philly nickels. At first I thought I'd save some of them, but then I realized most of the 2000-D nickels were like that. Some of them show Die Deterioration, but still have really shiny fields, so I assume there was something up with the planchets at the time. I'm not the only one to notice this, am I? I almost wonder if the Mint took extra care to make these nickels as attractive as possible, expecting large numbers of people to collect them for being "Y2K coins"? It was a big enough deal that Cheerios purchased $100,000 worth of Y2K pennies to give away in their cereal boxes. And, since '00-D is the second most common date after '64-D, maybe they've just been sitting in mint vaults and coin jars until the economy took a bad turn a few years ago? The coins of this date seem either really shiny or dirty, but hardly ever dull like most other nickels do after a while.. This shininess seems to end with the 2003-D nickels...
