So I got some wheat pennies from this really nice teller who saved 2 rolls from me. I was just looking through them when I spotted a 1943 copper penny!! I think I nearly had a heart attack at the moment. When I finally calmed down and stop fantasizing about what I would do with my fortune, I decided to compare it to an ordinary steel penny, and I didn't see any discrepancies, so that left three possibilities: a plated penny, an expertly crafted fake, or a genuine '43 copper. I decided to take a magnet to it to see if it stuck, and it did.
It's copper plated. I wasn't really dismayed because part of me knew that I wouldn't be that lucky.

You still have me beat! The best I've found in a penny roll is a clad Roosevelt dime ;)

Although not real, you've still got a fun find I say.

Wow.... the probability factor often keeps my heart from beating too fast, but the possibility of this must have been an intense feeling.

I wonder how many coins of note are found in roll hunting theses days....

Darn, that would have been a great find if it had been real. Still a very interesting find though. HH

I have to ask...

I keep hearing these stories of people finding what appears to be a 1943 copper cent in the wild, only to discover it is plated, fake, etc. Is there actually any chance whatsoever that there actually are any of these out there somewhere, or have they all been accounted for (like the 5 existing 1913 V nickels)?
Rest in Peace

I think there's next to nothing known about how many were originally minted (as they were technically errors, not purposeful strikings), so for all anyone knows there could be dozens yet in the wild. But I could easily be mistaken here.
Of course, even with known mintages a lot of serious rarities aren't all accounted for... e.g. out of 24 minted 1894-S dimes, there's something like 11-13 known. Then again these could've easily been melted - and I can't think of any other similar example with post-1857 non-precious coins (ignoring, of course, the 1959 wheat and 1974 aluminium pennies).
