The D is the beginning of the abbreviation of DEI GRATIA. The monarch's name is to the left, ending in VS. Inbetween is a V. The most likely monarch in 1701 who was "the Fifth" would be Philip V of Spain. What stands out in the arms on the reverse is the quartered coat in the upper left, with the vertical bars in an hourglass pattern; these are the arms of Sicily under Aragon, which were part of the coat of arms of Philip V, and other kings of Spain.
