Bushmaster08 New Member United States 1 Posts	Posted 08/03/2007 7:48 pm I have recently just started collecting coins. I was woundering if anybody had any info on this particular coin that I have recently came accross. The coin is an 1866 Indian Head penny with the name J.T. Murphy stamped accross it and on the backside is completely smooth like it had never been stamped. opefully the pics are good enough quality so that the details can be made out. Any info that can be provided would be greatly appreciated. I have done some research and I am come up empty handed. Funny, but the name on the stamp seems to sound familiar, though I can't place it. The reverse being smooth seems a likely candidate for a love token that never got finished....... Irishraider Pillar of the Community United States 1454 Posts	Posted 08/03/2007 10:18 pm This is from a Murphysboro, Ill newspaper article dated 1873. The school at Allyn Grove with Mr. J. T. MURPHY as principal, is in a flourishing condition. An assistant will be employed soon. Could be him, there was also a fairly prominent communist who lived in Great Britain during the 1910's with the same name. I doubt he was your J. T. Murphy. TSmith3510 Valued Member United States 455 Posts	Posted 08/04/2007 12:42 am I have a Seated dime somewhere that has similar characteristics. It's well worn on the obverse, but intact. The reverse was worn smooth and engraved with an engraving tool Someone's initials. When I come across it I'll post a pic. I think this was kind of a hobby back then.
