# is a hash mark and I agree the paper bills have to go for the coin to be used.

just_carl, you are a wise elder, never feel embarrassed by a youngster's lack of knowledge or bad manners. IMHO, we should patiently explain to people the facts about the new Presidential dollars and other unusual denominations when spending them. We have the knowledge, it is our duty to educate people. Hardly anyone knows what they are. However most people I have met think the new dollars are cool when you tell them what they are and how one for every president will eventually be out. And they might even find a valuable error coin if they are lucky. Kinda like the lottery without wasting any money. Let's spread the word and build some excitement, so even if people don't spend them they will be happy to get them. It's all good for the hobby. Plus we need to really change our tired old 20th century coin designs and get people out of this rut we are in.

At first I thought this baby dollar coin would be great. And I know that many of us are attempting to spread them around and make them known. My biggest problem is in the attempt all the problems they are causing. I hate lines in stores, banks, anywhere. But if those or any type of money creates such extended lines, I'm against them. I live in an area of heavy populations. Lines are everywhere already for everything. Now if your in a line in a grocery store with frozen foods and someone pulls out a dollar coin, everything stops while the cashier requests authentication with another cashier and that holds up another line. My frozen food is now melting and the USMint will not pay for the ruined food created by a stupid baby sized dollar. My experiences with restaurants is just to much to attept to educate all waitress so they don't make statements like you left your kids play money on the table. There is a time and place for everything but attempting to educate 300,000,000 people in the USA about strange looking coins is just way above me.

I just got a new Washington quarter in change and I'm sure it's a counterfeit! Instead of an eagle on the reverse it has a featureless blob that looks almost like a cowboy riding a horse!

There is an intransigence in America about many things. The most obvious is politics, my party right or wrong....WRONG, and it applies to our monetary system, too. There seems to be a division in class, education and or social position that intersects with knowledge. These attitudes create a resistance to change whether it be for inconvenience or lack of understanding. Simple, people do not want to be bothered with learning. Change, or the understanding of the need for change is a nuisance. We as collectors see a value in new designs from the mint as growth, art and opportunity. the avg American sees it as one more thing they have to deal with in their daily lives and they resist it. Lets not blame anything but the system. We currently have paper and coin $1. And, in the coinage dept there all sorts of coins now in circulation. The non-collecting American could care less and they are only confused by them. We need to go to either paper or coin and stop having dozens and dozens of styles available at the same time. Lets face it, if it was simply about coins for business trade, there would be no need for change. All of these changes are for profit and are driven by us, the collector. I sometimes wonder who is really the victim; the avg Joe on the street trying to recognize the next new coin design in circulation, or us, the idiots who beat a path to the mint doors to buy their next issue. Sorry for pontificating. Jim

Why would anyone want to ever spend a proof set? Maybe he had a lot of extra money laying around and just wanted to see their reaction to the coins... By the way, I looked at my proof set ( Presidential dollars) and there are 3 "hash marks" for a lack of words. This maybe from the collar when striking the coins. Check your proof set too. I'm sure that you'll see the same thing. There is one at the top, and 2 on each side a little bit more than 1/2 way down.
