Hi everyone, I am a new-bee, and was curious if anyone knew what coin this is? And since it is in such bad
shape, is it even worth saving? One the back it appears to be a "V" and maybe a wreath circling it. With a
magnifying glass and a flashlight, I believe I can see the date as 1818...But I searched 1818 coins and
found some that look like this one on the front but no V on the back? Anyone have an idea what it is?
Thanks ahead of time!

If it is 1818 then it is not ancient and you might be better posting on another forum. The moderators may move the thread for you. You need to post the other side of the coin and if possible, take it out of the flip and try to get some clear photos.

It is a US Liberty Head Nickel. Date would have to be between 1883-1913

There are 5 known 1913 examples ......

I agree that it's a Liberty nickel. Most years don't have much value but there are a few key years. Here's a link to a web site that lists estimated buyer prices - selling prices would be much less.

I can't see much from your pictures but if the date is barely readable then the value would be found in the G4 column or less (the leftmost column of the web page). It may be a keeper especially if it was handed down from a family member or has some sentimental value.

If you get us a clear picture we can probably identify the date. It looks to have some substantial environmental damage.

Picture is terribly out of focus. Can't really help too much.

Definitely a well-worn BARBER NICKEL, aka "V" Nickel.
The question, "Is it worth saving?" should be paid better attention.
The value of such an example lies in its unusualness to the average person today.
My dad (born 1916) found these easily in circulation.
I (born 1951) did not.
It is, was, and always will be worth exactly five cents.
Worth saving?
As a curiosity, of course.
As a method of making money, not a chance.

PS.
Born at Griffin and raised in Shelton, currently residing in New Haven.
We are nearly neighbors!
