As a hobbyist, and not a professional coin dealer, it seems like I see trends that come and go regarding the popularity of certain denominations or types. For example, maybe the market for Kennedy halves will really heat up for awhile because of the anniversary. When the demand goes up, the coin values go up. After awhile, it will probably stabilize and the demand flattens back out. That's just an example, I don't know if that is really happening with the Kennedy's or not. But it seems like I have seen it with Morgan's and with Walking Liberty halves. On the other end, it seems like the Franklin halves have been in a slump. Am I just seeing things or does this sort of heating up and cooling off thing really happen? Also, what would you say are the in demand coins right now? And how long do these trends usually last?

In the UK there was definitely a huge interest in modern pre-decimal coins in the years immediately before and after decimalisation - around 1967 - 1973. During this time, some fairly recent base metal coins were trading for much higher prices than they fetch nowadays. Afterwards the interest shifted more to silver and older coins. More recently the Olympic Games with the commemorative 50p coins made people show an interest in decimal commemoratives.

Not sure if I've ever seen a trend in any one type of coin. I've noticed that all Silver Dollars are really big for a long time now. I've never noticed any certain coin being more popular than others.

Larger size coins seem to be more popular than smaller size coins.

All series go through their phases but some series never get much popularity.Imo Franklins fall into this group due to the interest in Walking Liberty and Kennedy halves.
