After looking at the Buffaloes at the shop and getting more familiar with the varieties, I decided to check into my own Buffaloes and see if I had anything interesting. So far I did come up with this one. I do not know what happened to this coin, I guess it is environmental damage. I ruled out acid dating because there is much to much detail on the coin for that, but I could be wrong. I was not sure about this being a 14/13 overdate, but after seeing an MS ovedate coin on Heritage , I thought it looked remarkably similar. Anyone think this is a 14/13 ? or am I seeing things ? The small tab jutting out to the right just below the top of the 4 and a shallow line in front of the four lead me to believe it is the overdate..I sure hope it is ! Report this Post to the Staff

foundinrolls Pillar of the Community United States 3507 Posts	Posted 06/29/2008 2:31 pm OK...a few things...It was probably buried at one time in its life but don't attempt to clean it. It is suffering from environmental damage. Next, there is no doubt whatsoever that it is a 1914/13 overdate. The CherryPickers' Guide by Fivaz and Stanton as edited by Ellis, Fourth edition, Volume I lists it as FS#5c - 014.87 Believe it or not, it is scarce but more are turning up as people look for them. The environmental damage holds the value down a bit but this is probably a $200.00 (edited downward after I saw my typo) coin in this condition. Again, It is critical that you don't mess with it to clean it as that will reduce the value rather than enhance it. It is a nice find! InfiniteInterest Pillar of the Community United States 673 Posts	Posted 06/29/2008 7:54 pm I was not aware of this overdate either Thingee , until I ran across an article about it at the PCGS website. It was not even discovered until 1997, it went unnoticed for nearly 90 years ! Thanks for the confirmation Bill, I always try to get another opinion or two on some of these varieties - I don't always trust my eyes or my enthusiasm ! You are right about not cleaning this one, that color is embedded into the metal- I don't think anything would help it, it would only destroy it. I am guessing a Net Grade of VG with F details is about right on this one. Not a bad looking coin in hand- it looks more evenly dark purple and red than the pics show. After I saw that acid-dated net graded AG-G 18/17's and DDO 16's were going for 250-400 dollars at Heritage, I thought it might be good to get this one confirmed and maybe send it to ANACS. I believe San Francisco, and I'm fairly sure that eventually they will be known from all three mints. I see the 4/3 as interesting but not an incredibly important coin. Report this Post to the Staff
InfiniteInterest Pillar of the Community United States 673 Posts	Posted 06/30/2008 10:46 pm I don't know if the interest is high, and the article I read is a couple years old ( I read it last year sometime) The article did mention that they suspect that there would be some from each mint, but no S mints had been found at that time. When I went to heritage the other day, I only saw one 14/13 in the archives - it was MS and went for ...I want to say 8,000...I will have to investigate further. If anyone has a PCGS and/or NGC membership and can get some POP numbers on this coin -P, D , and S if possible- I would be very grateful Report this Post to the Staff

As I alluded to, more are being found all the time. Still, it's a high interest coin as the overdate is a fairly obvious one.
