Does anyone have info on the 1994S and 1997S special uncirculated Jefferson nickels? They were included in two sets from the mint--The Thomas Jefferson set in 1994 and the Botanical Garden set in 1997. The mintages are real low. RedBook says they resemble proof coins but with a matte finish. Are they that different? I guess what I am wondering about is are they worth the premium being charged for them? And also, how important are they for a complete Jefferson nickel set? The 1997 with a mintage of only 25,000 sounds like it might be a key. |

Matte proof coins have a rather dull finish on them. They are essentially proof coins, without the mirror finish. They are very different from proof coins. In recent years, the 1998 Kennedy Proof coin featured a matte finish. The Kennedy matte proof was included in a special set with the RFK commemorative dollar. Because of their low mintage, they are harder to come by. Are Matte proof coins important for a complete Jefferson nickel set? Its clearly up to you. I collect Kennedy halves. About a year ago, I decided to purchase the 1998 Matte Proof. I wanted to include it in my collection. You can debate whether the 1998 matte proof Kennedy is a key to the series, but I felt my collection would not be complete without it. |

Are Matte proof coins important for a complete Jefferson nickel set? I think that it is up to the individual as to if it would be in a complete set. When I first started,I kept asking myself that question with certain coins, so I went to the Dansco album, to have an uniformed list for me. I can then say that I have a complete set as per the Dansco album. |

 My Jefferson Dansco has no place for them, so I did not get them. I consider that album complete. I would also suspect that fewer people would break apart those special sets, as opposed to the more common annual sets. Edited by jbuck

I'm resentful on the 97. I ordered from the mint, preordered in fact, but all were sold out immediately to the volume buyers. The mint changed the rules for volume purchasing after that.

Thanks, amac44. I really was kind of hesitant about getting it at first but you figure with only 25k made and very few are MS70, it is pretty much a modern rarity. I originally had planned on the MS69 but layaway helped sway my spending for a month!

I have the 97 set but it is sealed in cello so I don't know what it looks like but I do know that these are very sharp strikes and are proof like in appearance. I am chasing after the 1993 250th anniversary set of Thomas Jefferson (with a matte special 1994 P Jefferson nickel included) as I want own the other nickel. Glad I have the tougher one of the two. I consider my complete set to be one of each of the business strikes that were put into circulation of a particular series or of the same basic design on obverse and reverse. The varieties, proofs, and special coins like these matte satin SMS nickels are additions to my collection and I am trying to get one of each to enhance my complete set of Jefferson's. Of course there is no hard rule on what a set is. A set can be as small as two coins and still be a set, or as large as every single die variety of every mint and year. Some will go by holes to fill in albums, others will go by Red Book listings.It's up to you to say what your set is. |
