Come on Fred, do you really think anyone could mistake a box of "pennies" for anything other than what it is? In My Humble Opinion, that is.

When I'm on coin forums, I call them cents. If I ask for some rolls at a store or a bank, or if I tell one of my children to "Get that penny out of your mouth!", I call them pennies.
The people at the store, bank, and my children are clueless, blind and ignorant to the world of coin collecting. They don't know, so it's excusable.
I guess it's all a matter of professionalism...

Great example, clarifying what I said (way back on page one) that the context in which either term is used is important.
Rest in Peace

Which reminds me, I've got to call the local dealership and ask them how much my 55 Chevy is worth. One of the nicest Schwinns they ever made.

While we might describe something costing one "penny", few Americans ever say "five pennies", "ten pennies" or "fifty pennies"; cents is usually used in plural.

...and then Muckeye said:
We Anglo's will have our genuine pennies. (or pence)

The main problem is our country is large and people all over say things differently. Saying FEW PEOPLE is only based on where you live. Where I live and grew up everyone says five pennies, ten pennies, etc. Cents is seldom used for anything when discussing pennies. Way to may people base their lives on the Wikipedia as if it was the bible. In some areas slang, so called English, is prodominate and even difficult for others to understand. Individuals with harsh Southern expressions also are difficult for many Northeners to understand.
The usage of words such as Pennies, Quarters, Nickels, Five Bucks, a Ten spot, Fin, Saw buck, Two Bits and on and on and on are in some areas as common as Hello. All depends on where you live.
AIN'T NO WRONG WAY IN THE USA.
