Hello,and to CCF...I'd say it's safe to spend..looks like zinc rot to me...cents from 1983 to present are made with a zinc core plated with copper. You can search zinc rot will show several examples

To CCF! Just zinc rot unfortunately setting in, from the Copper plating getting pierced. It's Post Strike Damage ( PSD). Worth 1 cent.

Thank you for helping. I've tried looking at photos but can't seem to find any that look quite like numbers or letters. So I magnified by 30 to see if this helped any to rule that out or further support. Thank you so much.

It was a zinc gas bubble that grew and then popped, much like a pimple.

That's kind of cool, really. Reminds me a little of the T1000 thrashing around in the molten steel in "T2".

Any split/poke though the plating will cause what you are seeing. The zinc gets air, its the beginning of the end for that coin.
