Mason Mark On Steel Wheatie- Insight?

I found a steel wheatie with a Mason compass & square stamped into it. I know the symbolism behind the mark, I just haven't run across it stamped into a coin before (perhaps I never looked as closely as I am now). Can anyone offer any insight as to why someone may have done this? biokemist6 Bedrock of the Community United States 12437 Posts	Posted 12/30/2008 8:05 pm It is not an uncommon counterstamp and I have seen several of them on wheaties but I have never seen the counterstamp on a steel cent so that is interesting. I believe it was once done by some members as a method of advertising the fraternal organization but I am not sure if it is a current practice or not. It is a common practice of some lodges to give out tokens or gifts to first time visiting brethren usually in the form of pins, stickers, coffee cups with symbols, etc. Maybe a particular lodge decided to give out cents like this and was accidentally spend by the recipient. Just have a personal fascination with secret societies I guess. Wouldn't it make sense to stamp a coin that bears a president that was a member or are cents the only coins that get stamped?
