Just curious and thought someone active in this section may have run across this...

I found a steel wheatie with a Mason compass & square stamped into it. I know the symbolism behind the mark, I just haven't run across it stamped into a coin before (perhaps I never looked as closely as I am now). Can anyone offer any insight as to why someone may have done this?

It is not an uncommon counterstamp and I have seen several of them on wheaties but I have never seen the counterstamp on a steel cent so that is interesting. I believe it was once done by some members as a method of advertising the fraternal organization but I am not sure if it is a current practice or not.

Hi and welcome Manderbeast. That is certainly a mason's square and compass. It is a common practice of some lodges to give out tokens or gifts to first time visiting brethren usually in the form of pins, stickers, coffee cups with symbols, etc. Maybe a particular lodge decided to give out cents like this and was accidentally spend by the recipient.
No biokemist6, I don't believe it is a mode of advertisement of the organization, however, they certainly have their own form of advertisement.
Holiday cheers.

Was Lincoln a mason? I know some presidents were but I am not greatly knowledgeable on the subject. Just have a personal fascination with secret societies I guess. Wouldn't it make sense to stamp a coin that bears a president that was a member or are cents the only coins that get stamped?

Thanks for your thoughts. After reading I think it's probable that someone did this personally for fun. Either to give to the newbies or to hand out at events, maybe as a fundraiser. Who knows? But it's interesting! Thanks again!
