2000 Maryland State Quarter Golden Plated

To a numismatist, this changes the coin's value from 25¢ to 25¢. Perhaps in 100 years, when a circulated 2000-D quarter is worth 28¢, it would harm the value a bit.
It wouldn't surprise me if you could sell this on the Bay for more than face.
As for the point, it's nothing more than a novelty made from a common, circulating coin. Maybe someone thought they could make it more valuable, or maybe they were just messing with around with it.

I have a jar full of early Statehood Quarters that have gold-ish toning on them, likely from storing them in a plastic Costco-sized cashew container. They resemble your coin.

There are/were, however many aftermarket companies that plated them, colorized them, you name it, to turn a buck. Most serious collectors consider these nothing more than gimmicks. I enjoy finding them in the wild and putting them in my "interesting circulations finds" jar.

I gotta say, while I love a pristine State Quarter, finding a novelty like this in pocket change is still a reason for me to pull it and stash it away. When the shiny looks weird, I'm probably going to keep the shiny
