Worked for me. I agree with the FG design being better...except Liberty is just a bit funky looking on his design. But at the time of this issue there were legit politics at play. That likely is why the Carter quarter was made as it was. And a lot of vending machines were very sorry they did not think through the physical properties as well. Agree, certainly the least attractive coin design in the entire US catalog by a great margin. Horrid thing.

triggersmob, it's not really a bad design but definitely poor execution. The effigy of Anthony is just too stern. And the reverse is essentially just a partial Eisenhower dollar reverse. But the main gripe was it was too similar in size and color to a quarter (the Kennedy half was twice that size!). And I don't recall if vending machines accepted them. Ok, I can see how the size might have been a problem. They probably didn't want to go too big, as they might not get used, just like half dollars.

Interesting read. Thank you for sharing.  I like to call the SBA dollar "Ike's Little Sister." The coin Ike, not the real Ike, since she was 70 years older. I have a set, at least what I defined as a set. Mint and Date, no varieties (15 coins). Call me strange, but I like them. I see higher and higher prices for the far near date coin.
All three S mint coins are tough in Gem and this applies especially to the '79 since it's not in mint sets.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

The Treasury decided to use the old Eisenhower reverse (the Apollo moon landing), suitably reduced in size as the Eisenhower dollar main complaint centered around its excessively large size. Consequently, the Mint resolved to create a smaller denomination, leading to the creation of the iconic Susan B. Anthony coin. Since the dollar coin was much smaller than the previous one, it reminded people of the Washington quarter however, leading to a lot of confusion. So then the vending industry quickly suspended efforts to modify its machines. With no mechanism to accept the coins at pay phones, tolls, or food and beverage vending machines and no public desire to spend the coins elsewhere the banking industry and the Federal Reserve quickly abandoned the coin. The Apollo 11 mission patch was the basis of Frank Gasparro's Eisenhower dollar and Susan B. Anthony dollar reverses for those wondering as seen below. So I personally have always liked them, probably more due to the fact of my family ties to both the Treasury Dept and Nasa, but certainly understand others who dont.
