Back when I searched through State Quarter BU rolls, I came across coins that were not fully cleaned from the mint (I'm assuming). Most had just a little here or there but there was one coin with the whole face of the coin had it - think roller lines but in grease. I had read somewhere not to remove the grease as it was a production defect. Is that the case? I mean it would be something very easy to replicate I would think.

I searched error-ref for "grease" but all I found related to hardened grease left on a coin were three possibilities, none of which appear to match what your words describe.

1) Black, Crusty Die Fill: https://www.error-ref.com/?s=Black%...sty+Die+Fill
2) Retained Die Fill: https://www.error-ref.com/?s=Retained+Die+Fill
3) Yanked-out fillings: https://www.error-ref.com/?s=Yanked-out+fillings

I'm sorry. I didn't really phrase it right. The grease is from post strike - soft and black. I say post strike because coin details appeared to be there from what I remember. Looks like it came off rollers across the coin. That's why I said think roller lines.

No worries! Thanks for explaining!
I have never seen anything like you describe, therefore I will most likely be of little help.

I do agree with Coinfrog that pics would help best in this case.

If it's post-strike, then it's "post-mint damage", even if the Mint itself put it there (which I suspect may not actually be the case, but rather from whoever it was that did the rolling). So it does not qualify as a "mint error".

I have certainly had brand new BU coins with black gunk on them. Hard to imagine that as a mint error, but then again, people do collect some strange stuff.

Also remember that Bu quarter rolls are not direct from the mint. The mint makes coins and ships them, in very large "bags" to a place that then processes/rolls them. I would think GUESS the black stuff is not from the mint (I may need corrected, but I don't know of anything in the minting process using black grease on the coins), that the substance is from the places using whatever machinery and equipment it takes to feed the counting, rolling, packing and whatever else machines?

@ Earle: Good point about where they are wrapped. These rolls had generic crimp wrappers. They were picked up from the bank at the year of release.

While this isn't the coin I was talking about, it is another that has blotchy grease on the obverse. Found it in the 25th tube - only 25 to go... The grease is only on the obverse of this Ohio quarter. I had checked to see if it was soft grease with a Q-tip at OF in USA.
