I'm on Team Original.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Peace dollars don't usually develop the vivid colors seen on some toned Morgan dollars. Don't remember the reason; something about how the planchets were prepared?

This example shows the dark and drab coloring I'd consider natural for a toned Peace dollar. Such coins seem pretty scarce but don't seem to attract the high premiums that rainbow-toned Morgans do.

I'm thinking natural--consistent with other Peace dollars I've seen.

toning progression is as follows

1. yellow (gold)
2. Brown
3. Blue
4. Red
5. Green
6. Purple
7. Black

what you are seeing is a typical advanced stage of toning where the majority of the toning has moved into the Purple/Black range. the other indicator of genuine toning is the smooth transition between colors which we see here.

TPG's love heavy toning, for me this is the reason I never went for toned coins. I'm not a fan of it once it moves into the black range.
