You mean EMP? I guess the next run on the banks would easier to survive if you keep some cash on hand.

Quote: For many, someday is today. I agree, jbuck. Many times I've seen people at the Starbucks drive thru paying for one drink with a card or cell phone app. Personally, I don't do cell phone apps and never use plastic for a purchase under $20. I think that someday when the mint stops producing circulation coins it will continue to produce collectible coins as long as there is a market for them. Quote... "Collectible coins are a massive global market valued at roughly $18 billion to over $20 billion, with projections climbing past $40 billion as demand for historical artifacts and alternative assets grows."

Quote: everything will be electronic transactions The demand for cold, hard cash will NEVER end as long as America exists. To remove it would be removing a piece of our freedom! I for one do not want the prying eyes of government and banks knowing everything I buy and sell.

I do not see why the mint is going to the trouble to change the composition if a complete discontinuation of the nickel is eminent. In my opinion they should just eat the losses until they can't anymore then stop making nickels altogether.

All we need is a dime, a new smaller octagonal 50 cent, the present dollar coin and a new small 2 dollar coin that is bimetallic like a twonie, with the same interrupted reeding. That will make them all distinct for the visually impaired.
Round to 10's. Keep nickels and quarters legal tender and slowly withdraw them. They can still be used in pairs under rounding to 10's.
