This is one of the large denomination banknotes ($500- $100,000)
that were made for bank use only so I doubt if there would be
any counterfeits as there would be no way of distributing them.

The printed colors and the sharpness of the printing is suspect. The note does not "stand up" well at all. I do not see a back plate number on the note, either. That number should be in the reverse frame open area in the lower right quadrant between "Five Hundred Dollars" and the scroll work to the right.
For now I'm leaning towards counterfeit.
A closer examination "in hand" might yield a different opinion.

These include $500 thru $10000 denominations. (The $100,000 denomination was never released into public circulation as those were used for settlements between Federal Reserve Banks.) Whenever a larger denomination note is deposited in this day and age the note is supposed to be retained for verification and redemption by the Fed. The customer receives a "pending" deposit of the face value pending verification. I don't think I've seen or heard of one being deposited in the last 25 years. They are worth much more than face but some people don't know that. Strange things happen. |

It's a raised note. It was bleached and printed over. Not a real $500

This is NOT a genuine $500. The print quality of the ink is the most obvious indicator.

OP here, my dad's friend were selling more pieces, do the serial numbers of the other bills help with figuring out if it's more like legit or counterfeit, since they came supposedly from the same place? Here are the other bills the friend was selling:   Edited by rollingturtle
